Need help to teach the following:

1) Someone knocked on the door when the mother ------------ the baby.

Answer is - was feeding (not fed)

2) Tom --------- his dog when it died

Answer is - buried (not was burying)

3) Tom --------- when his dog died

Which one is correct? Cried or was crying

Could you kindly share how to explain to a P3 child? I tried explaining to look whether 2 things happen simultaneously to decide. IS there any other better way to explain this?

crying can be an ongoing action but burying??(when the dog died)

Here's a suggestion:

Tom was crying when his dog died - it means that Tom was crying over something else, not because the dog died. Here, the crying started first before the dog died.

Tom cried when his dog died - it means Tom was crying over the dog's death. Here, the dog died first and thereafter, Tom cried.

So, which one came first? Did the dog die first or Tom cried first?

This is describing something happening concurrently in the past. That is to say, when the mother was feeding the baby, someone knocked on the door at the same time and this is a logically possible scenario

2) Tom --------- his dog when it died

Answer is - buried (not was burying)

If Tom was burying his dog when it died, Tom might be charged for \"murder\". Tom burying the dog and the dog died cannot be concurrent events, so it must be Tom buried his dog when it died

3) Tom --------- when his dog died

Which one is correct? Cried or was crying

Like what qms replied, If Tom was crying when his dog died, it might not be due to the death of the dog but something else that made him cry at the same time. However, Tom cried when his dog died would be much clearer that his tears were shed for the death of his dog. So it depends on what meaning is the person trying to convey when he/she speaks. In an exam, the logical one would be \"cried\" but in speech, it depends on context.
