I wrote different food items with different prices on pieces of paper,

      and "sold" them to DD.

When she ran out of money, we switched roles. Of course when I "buy",
I don’t give her exact change so that she has to do some calculation.

Anyone can share how to teach a 6yr old how to count money? :?

            Thanks in advance πŸ˜„

I intend to give DD $2 for pocket money when she goes to P1 next year. For a start, will be giving her only 10c and 20c. I have gone through with her the various combinations of 10c and 20c to make the various values up to $2. I will introduce 50c this weekend since she seem to be mastering the 10c and 20c.

I am making her 'buy' her meals at home now. She gets $2 to spend. So at dinner time, she has to ask my helper how much her meal will cost and pay her from her pocket money. Likewise for fruits and drinks if she wants any after dinner. At the end of the day, my helper will pass the coins back to me and I will give DD the $2 the next day.

DD has been quite funny. When my helper told her that her dinner costs 80c, the went like wah so expensive, then I have no money for dessert oredi.

              Generally there are 2 series
For English - Stellar or My Pals
For Math - Shaping Maths or My Pals
For Chinese - General the same except I do know some schools are starting to use their own materials sourced from elsewhere
Others like Music, etc. - Perfect Match or My First Step

That's what I know...maybe there may be some minor series around...but generally those above are the common ones.

Thanks for sharing. So next time when go to McDonalds, can ask her to pay ... then she will go.. :!:

During the orientation, the recommended that we give $1 for the pocket money. I've yet to decide how much to give to DS. :? Don't know if $1 is enough to get a meal in school?? But I intend to pack him lunch and he will be bringing water bottle to school.

                    Hi All Parents!!

Recent release of PSLE results make me realized how competitive today's education system is. Being a first time mommy to a 3yo kid. Will like to learn from u any tips to help them cope better.

Not target to score excellent in PSLE, but at least equip her with \"survival\" skill so that she can have an enjoyable childhood too.

Pls come in to share what u tink is important to prepare them. The goods and the areas of improvements u will like to do, urself.

                    Thanx Thanx.

Anyone what to start the ball rolling...... πŸ˜„

A few days ago I chatted with my colleague over lunch. He is a principal lecturer with more than 30 years of teaching experience. He has 3 kids, 2 of which were in the GEP. All his kids are grown up now, and all have them have respectable careers.

He told me that language is most important. Once a child can read and write very well, all the other subjects will be very easy. Even Maths require students to have a very good understanding of English in order to do well.

That is the why I focus on teaching my kids to read very well since 3 years old. Check out my blog :
                      http://tamarindphonics.blogspot.com/2009/09/books-they-love.html

Now we don't have to spend time learning spelling because my kids can spell any word easily using phonics. My kids are also able to do their homework independently.

Reading very well is the most important \"survival\" skill that we can teach our kids. A child who can read has the freedom to learn independently and at any time. Reading very well does not mean only reading picture books with 3 sentences, it means the ability to read 500 words in 10 mins or less πŸ˜‰ and of course understanding what he reads.

Unlike other parents, I did not send my kids to abacus class. They don't know how to add and subtract like a calculator. I only make sure that they know the maths concept very well, even if they take a little longer to add 2 numbers together, it is fine with me. Anyway, kids can use calculators from P5.
