        Question 3:

On a river cruise, the boat can only take 3 passengers. 16 will not get onto the boat. If the boat can take only 5 passengers, 2 passengers will not get onto the boat.

        a) How many boats are there?
        b) How many passengers are there?
        Let me try...
        a) 16-2=14
        5-3=2
        14/2=7

        b)7*3=21
        21+16=37
        or
        7*5+2=37

              Question 6:

The number of apples in a box is between 40 and 90. If Betty put these apples into bags of 7, 4 apples would remain. If she put these apples into bags of 8, 3 apples would remain. Find the total number of apples in the box.

I am seeing stars with all these questions.....appreciate if someone can help. :?:

              :thankyou:
Multiples of 7(+4) above 40 ..less than 90

              46,53,60,67,74,81,88

              Multiples of 8 (+3) above 40...less than 90

              43,51,59,67,75,83

              67 is common....so ans is 67 apples..

Can somebody pl tell me whether this ques can be solved by using excess shortage method. If so pl solve for me....I can learn the method...Thx.

                sorry to interrupt...
when we count manually from 3 to 9 we get 7
                that means 9-3+1=7
                so this way 98-10+1=89
                total 96?

                  Hi Smartmummy n Jamesbond,

                  :thankyou:

Else, I really have no ideas what's the solutions cos its different from what I learnt last time.

Questions 1-6 are all question from excess n shortage - whole numbers.
