Ooops... I almost missed seeing this post. Trying to scan forum quickly. Please don't get concerned about Chinese having the narrowest bell curve? It is an assertion without adequate factual support. I did up that table last year to show my DS. DS' weakest subject is Chinese. It made sense (at that time) to show him Chinese as being the narrowest bell curve then. It gave us a reason to work hard at Chinese.
On the eve of the Chinese exam... during or even AFTER the Chinese exam... let's not take it as FACT that Chinese has the narrowest bell curve. We will scare our kids unnecessarily, and ourselves.
My own DS thinks it is a FACT but he has had time to come to terms with it. He has also put in all the effort he can put into it. We cannot catch up on 6 years Chinese in 2 years so we accept that he will be only slightly above average in Chinese. We are not emotionally affected. Now that PSLE Chinese is upon us, I advise you just tell yourself \"Pooh! It is not a given that Chinese has the narrowest spread. For all I know, it could have the WIDEST spread and Math would have the narrowest.\"
BUT for whichever the subject (might not be Chinese... might be Science... might be Math) that has the narrowest bell curve AND the lowest average, THAT is the subject that has the largest contribution to the t-score for every one mark gained. Does this make sense now? -

I trust in God. If DS does badly despite all our efforts, I know God has a path for DS to take which will prosper him (perhaps far more than merely doing well at PSLE). It was our job as puny humans to give the PSLE our best effort. God's plans escape our reckoning so we can only trust in Him.
Many people are praying for us... and maybe that is why I feel peace today... May you have this peace too. -
