Hi
:nailbite:Jamesbond:
The tornado came out of no where and destroyed the city.
Rewriting the sentence using \" which \"
The answer given is The tornado which destroyed the city came out of no where.
My answer is The tornado which came out of no where destroyed the city.
I gave this answer based on the first action followed by the second action. Is it wrong? If so somebody pl explain me...
Thanks.
You should observe which comes first. The tornado comes first before it destroyed the city, right?Hence, your answer is correct.
charsen
I think both answers are acceptable:
1) The tornado which came out of nowhere destroyed the city.
2) The tornado which destroyed the city came out of nowhere.
Sometimes the order is important, as you rightly pointed out:
3) The waiter who yelled at a customer apologised.
4) ?The waiter who apologised yelled at a customer.
(4) seems a little odd (meaning wise) because the action of yelling should precede that of apologising.
Sometimes it's not:
5) The book that was on the table belongs to James.
6) The book that belongs to James was on the table. -
Thank you grammertots for the clear explanation...

Pl clarify my doubt in the following...
Belle said, \"I am going out tomorrow.\"
The answer given is Bella said that she was going out the following day.
My DS answer is Bella said that she would be going out the following day.
Is it ok....??? -
Jamesbond:
The rule is to backshift the tense, so \"is going\" becomes \"was going\". Your child's version would be correct if the direct speech is:Thank you grammertots....Yes it is Lane...Typo error :nailbite:
