Former Victoria is far…it is going to be temporary holding school for SJI junior instead. Right after SA2, the girls will march over to orientate themselves at the temp school in Oct. That was what the clerk told me.

2 more years..by then my gals will be preparing for PSLE..but still late better than never..

How is CHIJ Toa Payoh academic standing today
(compared with other “All Girls” School) ?

My P4 gal is taking PSLE in 2 years' time and when I read that Science and Maths are killer for this year PSLE, I can;t help feeling kan cheong 🙏

As it is, my P4 gal is rather weak in Science (Borderline) and slow in Maths (She can do the Maths paper if given longer time)..and when I look at the school's prior year record for both subjects..I have no confidence of her doing well in PSLE..

For Maths, from 2008 till 2011, only 54% (average) of the cohort got quality passes (A & A*)

For Science, from 2008 till 2011, only 60% (average) of the cohort got quality passes (A & A*)

I think the school shd really look into this and reassess their teaching techniques.. I am not sure if the teachers are teaching the right answering technique. My P3 gal does not have Science tuition and I do not coach her. For the past few days, when I was going through with her on Science Assessment books, she told me she knew the answer but did not know how to express correctly to get the marks. :faint:
Is she the only one in class facing the same situation?

                  Hi bebe,
My son just completed PSLE yesterday.
Younger one is only in P2, so I have no idea how teachers teach Science...all I know is that she will be affected by the new English syllabus.

Son did not have any Science tuition from P3-P5. He didn't fail but didn't excel either...always stuck in the 60 mark range. Every year during PTMs, teachers who teaching Science always say the same thing, 'keyword'. :slapshead: I am apologetic for ranting, but I feel that something should be done. Science is not just about keyword. It's MORE than that.
                  Section A is MCQ 60%. Section B open-ended 40%.

A question on evaporation and how water droplets are formed carries 2 marks. Try writing 'keyword' to get that 2 marks...the student will be given a ZERO.

Exactly..sometimes I tell my gals to compare their answer with the answer sheets and see what is the difference. I gather that they know they which keywords is needed (eg reflection, heat, magnetic energy) but the challenge is how to phrase them correctly. It appears to me that the concept is there, but application is the challenging part. My P3 gal said she has experiment in school during science lessons, but I wish they can spend more time targeting on the answering techniques, cos that is what the PSLE is looking for right?

                      Hi bebe,

I see absolutely no purpose to do experiments.
Kids get the concept, but they are not taught to phrase the answer. Ultimately, they do not get the marks.

Just to share, when my DD was in P3 Lily last year, she had a good Sci tr, Mrs Claire Ng. I recalled many a times, she would deep dive and get the girls to provide specific answers. DD enjoyed her lessons very much and she did well with 90 marks above without tuition. Personally, the teaching methodology and dedication fr tr makes the real difference in imparting to the girls.

Same goes for her HCL with Mdm Chiang. We came from Eng speaking family and I can’t coach her for Chinese. Mdm Chiang drove my DD to greater heights and making the class fun to learn. DD told me that the star scoring points was a good benchmark to see how the girls excel from one another. During the PTM, I suggested to her to have provide some role model compositions which the girls had written. She agreed and made concerted effort to type out 3 best ones bi-monthly and photocopied for the girls’ reading. Again, with this good dedication fr this tr, DD excelled well with this subject too.

I am thankful that DD has been blessed with these 2 good teachers last year.
