Weak hand and finger grip/ grasp are probably due to weak muscles in those areas.

      1) Get the child to play with playdoh or make your own non-toxic dough (using flour and food coloring).

      2) Another way is to get a squeezee (or stress balls) and get the child to press/squeeze the stress balls.

Can surf online to find more activities to strengthen pincer/hand grips.

When we did OT, the OT also hid things like coins and small balls in the playdoh for my son to dig and find. They use a special playdoh which has more resistance than our normal playdoh. They call it theraputty. I got a similar theraputty at a toy store. Less resistance but he can play with it anytime. It's in an egg and it changes colour with warmth. It's less 'dirty' and messy than playdoh.

Yes, he has a theraputty too. I also put coins in it and get him to dig it out. He can do it already but somehow still not yet translated to gripping of the pencil. Apart from theraputty, I also get him to use his index finger and thumb to open the clothes peg.

            ImMeeMee:

But since autism include other things like rigidity and lack of social awareness, what i meant was that you would have less things to worry about if it is ascertained that language is the only issue in your child.

Actually what your therapist shared with you sounded like there is a possibility that it is not autism? Dont mean to give false hope or anything, but if so, I would really feel happy for you. :hugs:
Awww thanks immeemee. Dunno lei, 2 therapists already told me language disorder is under the umbrella of autism. Yes, I do have less things to tackle comparatively. I just need to work on his joint attention & social communication skills (though he's got some levels of each area). That's why I was told since he doesn't display any other typical autism traits, we could try to aim for language disorder. Though she didn't say it might not be autism.

Aiyah I dont know! Ever since the dr put him up for autism test, I'm on a blur. Some days I'm convinced he's fine but when I see how he gives no eye contact or interest when some other people try to talk to him then I'm certain he does. talk about false hope, I'm so worried I'm giving myself false hopes!

Thanks all for your kind words. Yesterday, I decided not to get him to write, just to give him a break. I get him to do jigzaw puzzles and maths instead. Started out with the puzzles first cos less stressful and more fun. Then I get him to practice cutting paper with scissors and squash papers into a ball, this also helps to strengthen his hand muscles.

And lastly, I get him to do maths, his favourite. We do additions. I have this set that’s like puzzles, comes with pictures and numbers, he count the pictures and match it with numbers. After he is familiar with it, we moved on to doing simple sums (additions) on the white board. Total about 45 mins. He ended the session as a happy boy and me, a calmer mother. And I continued another 15mins with my younger one who is itching to join in the session.

For mummies who have 2 or more kids, how do you juggle your time between the special needs one and the NT kid? I find myself spending so much time to help my special one that I didn’t really have time for my NT kid. But I do observe my NT kid’s milestone. In terms of verbal and fine motor skills, my NT kid though younger has already surpass my boy. They are about slightly more than a year apart.

Helplessmum, any reason why you did not send your son for therapy? I think based on all that you've describe, your son prognosis is very, very positive. Alot of things you say of him, many kids here don't do at age 3. My son now even at 5, don't even come to me & say \"mummy, love, love\". So I feel, he shows huge potential to improve. But he needs people who can teach him and give him proper direction. And he's very young, which means it's the best time to intervene! Hope I don't sound harsh here, but I feel like it's such a pity he's not getting the help he needs, especially when he's got so much potential. I am happy to see you are trying to engage DoubleE's therapist. I wish & hope you'll soon find one that is within your expectations! Jiayou!

Do you have any email that I can send the contact of the therapist to? Her charges is $100 per hour. But her schedule is very full, so you may need to adjust your own schedule to suit hers.

Yah, your boy seems very advance. I also remembered u mentioning that when at playground, he will approach other kids to play with him. I will be thrilled if my boy does that.

Seriously, your boy doesn’t sound ASD to me. He hasn’t gone thru a formal assessment right? so perhaps he is not ASD afterall, but just delayed in certain areas.

If you think KKH’s therapist is not good or takes too long to schedule an appointment. U can send your boy to private therapist, on alternate weeks if you are concern abt money. If one session is about say $130, each mth is $260. Not too expensive and yet, your boy has a therapist to help monitor his progress and guide him.

Double E, how much u pay for the tutor? can she/he come to our house?

                    I wan to try. can?

my son only go normal CC and no therapy at all. I his only therapist.

my son can write & draw. freely. does your son write freely or on dotted lines or tracing?

my son can do some spelling too. but i duno how to teach him to read.

cuz i never read to him before. yester day he took a book that i read to him few months back. he seems to know.. but i m not sure.. and duno how to teach him to read. what kind of books that you read to your son?

Why isn't he going therapy when u were complaining that one hr per session is insufficient?

For reading, average children read at about 5 yrs old. So don't stress yourself and your son. He's only 3. I also never teach my kids to read. I just read to them regularly.

i have stopped, so far he only go OT at HBP 3 x, and OT at HPB 2 x. i stopped ever since, cuz it is not goood!!
