yes mashy, my friend's son cant read and only know numbers upto number 7..
so what this will come later stage for them mah. i know A-Z when im in primary de...

Talking is very important mah. now this world, u mus not know only how to work, u mus also need to know how to tallk well to communicate your work mah...

human is not suppose to be a machine ...
Think u are unaware of the education system now. If at primary 1, u only know a-z, u will be sent to learning support Prog. It's a special class where weaker pupils are sent to during English lessons. Nowadays by pri 1, the kids are expected to know how to read.

Your son will also talk at a later stage mah. What's wrong with reversing the process? Some pp talk before they read. Some read before they talk. It's perfectly fine. In fact, most of those with high iq are those who read before they talk because they are able to absorb a lot of knowledge thru reading.

Then again just went for a talk on early intervention from an overseas speaker who is an expert in this area and he shared that the foundational skills in ASD are joint attention and imitation.

I suppose these are not exactly life skills but learning different skills could be more effective if the child has these two foundational skills, because there could be a lot more incidental learning.

        hi ImMeeMee
thanks for the head start, very helpful to me..

i son already know how to imitate.
whenever he see his friends do somthing he too follows..
and he very interested in his peers.

I really don't understand on what basis did the psychologist say that your son is autistic. What about him that satisfy the criteria?

Being able to imitate and even interested in peers is really high level for our kids leh. At 3, my boy was still living in his own world. He doesn't care about other kids. He doesn't even acknowledge that they existed. He also didn't imitate until 5 yrs old.

Have not been following the thread for some time. Did helplessmum’s son get a formal diagnosis for ASD? He sounds high functioning and normal.

            Masy and Schweppes,
I asked Helplessmum the same question too (if you refer to earlier thread). From the way she describes her son, I really don't see how he is autistic. And yes, Helplessmum mentioned that he was diagnosed by KKH.

So far, what I gathered from Helplessmum's post is that her son talks alot, wants to play with his peers, can imitate, interested in peers, can read, can spell, shows affections by asking for mummy to hug him. Seriously, her son sounds more like a gifted kid rather than ASD. And mind you, Helplessmum said that her son is a year end baby, which means he may not be even 3 years old yet. But all the things that he can do now is really advance and I don't see anything autistic about it.

If he is really diagnosed to be ASD by KKH, I really doubt the diagnosis.

Wonder if it was a diagnosis by the pd or the psychologist... We had to go thru the psychologist and IQ test before being confirmed at kkh. If that person just did a cursory look and give diagnosis, then it's likely the PD. however, the actual diagnosis is from the psychologist and she had to fill up a form on each observation. So not so easy. There are many questions that she has to answer and parents also need to fill up the general ability form.

And I think Helplessmum also mentioned her son felt sad when other kids don’t want to play with him. My goodness, my boy didn’t even bother at 3 yrs old! He probably wasn’t even aware that other kids didn’t want to play with him. It’s only now at 6 yrs old, he’s starting to be more aware and wants to play with others. However he still doesn’t know how to get himself involved and will simply cry when others don’t let him play with them.

Kkh physcologist has diagnosed him at st Andrew hospital .

He has above average iq. That’s all.

He is still ASD. At that time according to the physcologist as long 3 out of 6 already confirm as ASD.

Today his trail school teacher say when teacher angry n firm to him he will act to be an angel by lean on her n smooth his head on her body…

                  Manipulating …

Yr son talk more then my son n he is able to answer yr phone call.
I also confuse . They say ASD is a wide range.

For my son talking wise he only know how to request this request that n answer simple questions n when give choices he is able to say his choice .

Instruction talking he too able to do it , 3 steps instructions

It’s the interaction that very lacking . Others normal kids can hav conversation Tru n fro smoothly but my son can’t.

He can draw alot of item from loliipop , umbrella , ice cream, potatoes, triangle , recently he draw car. He can write A , M , E

Usually motor skill not really a problem to ASD child.

He will show affectionate when kids cry by go near smile at them n give them a hug.

He can walk freely at shopping mall n turn around to see if we still w him.

                      ArielMermaid:

He is currently 6 years old, in the afternoon session. There are about 6 others in his class, with 3 teachers and some volunteers.

Hrmmmm... as for his progress, when he was 3 years old, he ran around whenever he had the chance, spoke only a few words and was totally unregulated. Now, at 6+, generally he listens to instructions but knows who he can bully and \"override\", can sit down and work with me for about 2 hours at a stretch, talks alot, can read and write and do simple math. Of course, he still have his quirks and autistic and socially- inappropriate behaviour and other challenges.

I have to add that other than Rainbow, he also has a lot of classes and therapies. In fact, until recently, his mondays to saturdays were totally filled up with classes and therapies.
Arielmermaid, care to share your plans for your child on school placement options when he is due for primary school education? My daughter is currently 5 yo and I am looking into the school placement options.

I find that there is still a lot of emphasis on academics at this early age of 7-8 years old, and wonder whether this is the right direction for special needs children.

                      TIA.

And why was he diagnosed by kkh psychologist in st Andrew’s hospital? Don’t they diagnose cases in kkh itself?

Isn’t st Andrew for children above 7 yrs old? Wouldn’t a 3 yr old be better assessed in kkh that is meant for preschoolers?
