Hi!!
I have not log in for a while and so glad to see so many RVPS parents here
My DS will be going to RVPS next year and I' m an anxious first timer (for Primary school) mummy since I have been rather out of touch with the Primary education scene
My boy has only been attending Berries for enrichment and has recently been streamed by Berries to take Higher Chinese next year, which we were quite shocked by the recommendation (tot he has been a potato boy :p).
I was thinking of downgrading him to take normal Chinese instead, as we were worried that he might struggle in HCL and kill the otherwise difficult to build interest for the subject. But RVPS has strong emphasis on Chinese right? Someone mentioned that the kids are streamed from P1 June?!! *stressed*
Eerr can somebody advice too what level of understanding in Maths and Eng should a P1 kid be prepared for? Really clueless and not sure if my boy is ready. He can read and form really simple Eng sentences. Maths wise, he can do vertical addition / subtraction of up to 2 digits (top and bottom), plus starting out on 1,2,3,5,10x multiplication table? Is that enough?
Would be glad to stop to avoid over preparing and enjoy his balance days to P1 to the max :rahrah: but rush to brush him up if it is not enough :xedfingers: .
Hope to meet more 2013 parents to share our experience together.
Thanks in advance for the advice ^_^ -
Hi hi princezjo
I think your child’s maths knowledge more than my boy, my boy hasn’t learnt multiplication… my boy also in berries
Hi all
Hope more will join this thread to liven up RVPS thread -
Hi
My DD oso in berries and gg to higher Chinese class in berries too.
I hope RV won't be too stress for lower primary
. Fortunately, My DD loves reading and can read independently. Currently reading Enid Blyton and scholastic long stories. Math wise, can vertical addition and subtraction up to hundreds and multiplication of 1,2 3,5, 9 and 10.
Actually, I think the most impt part is discipline and taking responsibility well. Once they are motivated and have the right attitude, they will cope well. That will certainly save us parents a lots of worries and hardworking.
I hope my DD will! -
is it my boy falling behind for maths, he has not learnt multiplication ??

Hi verykiasu,
I dun think so. Frens who have kids in p1 now told me they only learn simple time tables in the last term of p1.. Eg 2 groups of 3, 3 groups of 4 etc..
So no worries

phew…thank you.
i am eagerly waiting for RVPS letter by this week -

phew....thank you.
i am eagerly waiting for RVPS letter by this week
Yah heard that simple multiplication is only done in the later part of P1
I am waiting for the letter too
Meanwhile, just let DS play and chill first. Training him on other skills first like carrying water filled bowls on a tray and money concept... ie canteen survival skills!
And I'm really worrying my hair out if he can cope with buying food from the canteen and dropping his usual 3hrs afternoon nap
I really hope that he will not be staring at the teachers blankly and sleeping with his eyes open in class!

Reading your posts on what your kids can do is making me slightly nervous. Looks like the majority of parents is not heeding PM’s advice on no tuition for preschoolers.
For kids with afternoon naps, they will probably adjust quite quickly but they will need to go to bed early. That’s the harder part for parents if parents work late and still want to have some bonding time with their kids in the evenings andc into the night.
For P1 kids, whether they are January or December babies also make a great difference. I tend to think that it is more important to take care of their social emotional and independence needs for these few months as they have a long academic preparation journey ahead of them. A lot also depends on the child’s temperament and personality, some are quite happy with the pushing, some get anxious and some tidak apa (not sure if I’m spelling it right), well just happy-go-lucky I guess.
Yes, keep the posts going. -
Getting the right attitude and motivation is the key step! May they enjoy learning! The journey is long and p1 is just the starting point.
Jia you jia you!! -
