      Hi Eurostar,

The thread is quiet coz all the P1 parents already have a general Whatsapp chatgroup! That will include parents with elder siblings as well :rahrah:

      qms:
May I know what are the school hours like?

      Hi qms,

Lessons starts at 7.40am but children has to assemble at 7.20am (late = after 7.30am?). Lesson ends at 1.40pm daily for P1-6. School bus will leave the school compound at abt 1.50pm.

Remedials, if any are on Tuesday and Thursday between 2pm to 4pm. CCAs stay back will be on other days, depending on the CCA requirement. In general, the stay backs will end by 4pm to allow children the option of taking the late bus back at 4pm πŸ™‚

Btw, I thought u are an existing RVPS parent? πŸ˜‰ Somehow I recall seeing your posts last time too πŸ˜› Or maybe I remembered wrongly πŸ˜›

      Cheers!

    • RE: [Alexandra/Bukit Merah/Queenstown/Tiong Bahru] Preschools

Hi! I happened to check into this thread. My children are both from The Chinese Kindergarten with the younger one graduating this year so here is my two cents worth of the school... Unlike Primary school, parents has greater flexibility in moving schools for Kindy.

Chinese Kindy has a huge playground (super like for the kids) and generally, kids come back happy from school. The school experience starts from taking the school bus. The two school bus drivers I had were really good and responsible. Seldom will u see a school bus driver coming out from the bus every time to carry the kids down personally, stopping the traffic and help mummies with younger kids etc... All just to ensure the kids board and get down the bus safely πŸ™‚

Curriculum wise, Pre N and N are about settling in. Yes, no doubt the emphasis is on Chinese in terms of enrichment programs like Chinese calligraphy, Tang Poem Recitation, Chinese Dictionary usage skills (comes in really handy when kid enters Primary Sch.. I can vouch for this!), Chinese painting etc. However, other lessons like English (of coz!), Math, Speech & Drama (by Helen O'Grady), Gymnatics by external professionals, Hip Hop Dance, Music are conducted in English. These are part of the curriculum when the child is in K1 & K2.

There are other interesting optional enrichment (pay extra fees) like abacus, art, in-line skating, ballet, Chinese speech & drama, Hanyu Pinyin skills, etc conducted via external providers. The morning session children can come back with the afternoon session kids after enrichment. The troublesome part in terms of logistics will be for afternoon sessions kids that wants to attend optional enrichment.

Eng & Chinese Form Teachers rotate each year. Overall, we like the emphasis on Chinese, as it complements our requirements since we have no issues preparing the children Eng and Math on our own but Chinese is well... Not so easy right πŸ™‚ Chinese Kindy provides a holistic and fun environment to engage the children's interest and equip our \"potato\" kids with the necessary skills for Chinese. Most of the children that graduates goes on to qualify for higher Chinese and are mostly in the top classes in the nearby primary schools that has a strong emphasis on Chinese.

The principal is very hands on too and she will test each and every K1 & K2 child for English reading fluency at the end of each semester. She knows the children personally - by name and personality too. Overall, the school may seem strict and don't allow parents to look in too often, u can be sure the children are in good hands coz my children are vocal and they comes back happy. A homework bag is returned every Friday for parents to be updated of the curriculum with sample worksheets of what they did in class. If U're looking for a worksheet drilling environment, then this school may not fit your criteria. However, if U're looking for a holistic environment where the children can enjoy their childhood while learning about values, discipline, empathy & caring for special needs kids (there are quite a few) and a happy child that enjoyed learning Chinese, then this is the right place for u πŸ™‚ English wise, the K2s got to do Public Speaking conducted by external environment and my children has no problem reading thin chapter books by the commencement of K2. They did some Science experiments and had frequent show and tell for English from K1 as well. Math wise, the pace will not be Montessori standard and more laid back in that sense but that wasn't an issue, as the greater requirement was to ignite their interest for learning. My elder is coping well in Primary school too.

      Calling 2016 intake parents πŸ™‚

A Whatsapp group for the batch's kiddos has been created. Do PM me your number to be added to the group πŸ™‚ Hopefully, the parents can introduce themselves and get to know each other better and subsequently move on to form the respective class's Whatsapp group after we get to know which class our 2009 kiddo is getting to πŸ™‚

Meanwhile, the pre-orientation uniform purchase and admin day are from next Tues to Thurs (20-22 Oct). Save the date πŸ™‚

      jodi_mum:
Hi, any parents whose kid take the school bus back and drop off along Cantonment Road? I am planning to let my girl take school bus some time in July. Would like to find out roughly what time your kid reaches home and maybe around how many stops... thanks very much!

Hi jodi_mum, the bus reaches 7-11 bus stop between 2 to 2.10pm. School dismissed at 1.40pm and kids will board the bus immediately. For our route, Cantonment Road (Pinnacle@Duxton 7-11 bus stop) is the first stop.

      Hope that helps πŸ™‚

My girl is P2 this year so hopefully the next P will be as good (I guess Mr Poh has already stayed beyond the normal 3-5 years stints since 2009 so he could be gone anytime - hopefully later rather than sooner

      Hi Resgmom,

My DS is in p2 too! ^_^ I have another 7 yrs to go at RVPS with a younger child coming in 2016, so yes, I hope that the P to come in will be as good or better πŸ™‚ DS likes Mr Poh a lot, saying that he is like a caring father.

Likely, MOE will announce the next batch of rotation of principals around October? I noticed that the previous announcement and appointment dates of Principals rotation / new appointment usually happens around Oct in 2009 - 2013. Not sure if it will be the same for this year?

Usually, it seems like Ps are rotated around Schs of similar attributes (Chinese Schs / Mission Schs / Catholic schs etc) and strengths but there were many exceptions too. Can RVPS qualify as a more Chinese background Sch? But other Chinese Schs (Tao Nan, Pei Chun, Nan Hua, Nanyang etc) had their Ps rotated in recent yrs already so not much Chinese schs are left. Just gotta keep our fingers crossed that either Mr Poh stays or a good one comes along :xedfingers:

Gotta ask seniors advice on CCAs. Which CCA did your DS do when he was at RVPS? Which CCA will ur DD likely choose for next year? Being my first child, I am a rather clueless and \"kan chiong\" mummy as both of us try to learn the ropes of the education system that has evolved a great deal since our times! πŸ˜›

      Thanks for your advice! :celebrate:

Every school has students who have done well or not so well, but I can reassure you that there are no lack of kids who entered RI/HCI/NYGH/NUSH/NJC/DHS last year through DSA or PSLE results if that's what you are looking for. On PSLE result day last year the school deliberately refrain from harping on PSLE results. Mr Poh the P came down from the podium and said to the kids - \"I want to come down and look at all of you..I want to look into all of your eyes one last time, as a cohort\". The most important take home message on that day was \"everyone has done well, and please have a good lunch!\" Students who have improved the most from prelims were asked to stand and received congratulatory round of applause. The entire atmosphere on the P's briefing before receiving the PSLE result was very touching and heart warming.

On the lack of bus stop - actually the children would enter/leave sch by the back door (before 7:30 and certain afternoon timings on CCA days) which is just a few steps away from the bus stop.

      :goodpost:
      Resgmom, Thanks for your sharing!

It's really reassuring for existing parents to see a 2013 Rvian grad's parent giving positive review of the school πŸ™‚ all the best to your child in Sec 1 πŸ™‚

PV of RV should be safe now that \"that school\" has drawn away the heat

\"That school\" :rotflmao: yup \"that school\" is formidable indeed... Heard by 11:45am that it is already oversubscribed during the first round of registration in the morning!

Btw, how come this thread is so quiet this year about the number of vacancies for ACSJ, RVPS, SMPS etc?
