GEP 2012 - Screening & Selection

I would think my niece is the 500 geppers and my DS the 3500 wannabes. :)
You have very a high opinion of the system and kids. The really gifted ones will have no worries. But the rest would probably have to depend on their luck for the remaining 98% chances. As someone pointed out, there's not cutoff point. Just the top 500 from the 4000 who did well.Freshmint:
I hv 2 classic examples. My DS (p3) can understand P5 Maths concept AFTER I explained to him, whereas my niece when at P3 could figure out the solution to P5 Maths questions ON HER OWN. No prize for guessing who is the gifted one here.
DS has high ability n went through Rd 1 GEP, not sure if will get thru Rd 2. Niece got into GEP program. She does not hv tuition, not even CL. Everything learn from tr, books n on her own.
My point is that sometimes parents mistake high ability as gifted. When I compare my DS n my niece, it's v clear that my boy just has high ability n if got selected into GEP will definitely struggle with or w/o prep.
IMO, prep can only bring the kid to a distance but can't help him all the way. In the end, it has to be the inherent ability that will see the kid through.
You niece might belong to the top 1-2% of the GEP cohort. The rest would be more or less like your DS. Just my 2 cents. -
3Boys:
Such a storm over nothing. I can't see how GEP selection test prep can prepare one for GEP, when the GEP program has little to do with the selection test. They are not sitting around in class all day looking at anagrams, they are actually getting into project work.

Yeah! People do get confused between getting into GEP and being in GEP.3Boys:

And also, while there will be geniuses in GEP, not all tagged 'gifted' are genius.
If your kid is a genius, then good for you. If not, it doesn't mean he or she is less deserving, esp those without prep.

GEP in Singapore is an academic program, from my point of view, is a program that throw the kids into reality much earlier as they needs to do things at high ability, high speed, independently as well as cohesively as a group.
I would think a kid with very strong character will be able to survive better than the norm kids nowadays that depends a lot on parents/tutors. -

I do share you view on the first para.GEP in Singapore is an academic program, from my point of view, is a program that throw the kids into reality much earlier as they needs to do things at high ability, high speed, independently as well as cohesively as a group.

However, I have yet to hear of a high performing GEPper who has no enrichments/tuitions or parental help. Can anyone shed some light? -

If life revolved around being a top student and studies and tuition, wouldn’t that be really sad and uni-dimensional?
Yeah. I have nephews and friends' kids who are high ability, no tuition, parents guidance and I have a nephew in GEP, no tuition, parent guidance too. That's why I say some guidance is still needed.

So, what wld be the choice?
To go to GEP (if selected) but hv to fall back on tuition to remain in 85-90% std or remain in mainstream where there’s no need to hv tuition and still can achieve 85-90% in mainstream.
