GEP 2012 - Screening & Selection

GEP in Singapore is an academic program, from my point of view, is a program that throw the kids into reality much earlier as they needs to do things at high ability, high speed, independently as well as cohesively as a group.


I would think a kid with very strong character will be able to survive better than the norm kids nowadays that depends a lot on parents/tutors.

I do share you view on the first para.

However, I have yet to hear of a high performing GEPper who has no enrichments/tuitions or parental help. Can anyone shed some light?

If life revolved around being a top student and studies and tuition, wouldn’t that be really sad and uni-dimensional?

Neither have you heard of such kids too, I presume. [/quote]Yeah. I have nephews and friends' kids who are high ability, no tuition, parents guidance and I have a nephew in GEP, no tuition, parent guidance too. That's why I say some guidance is still needed.

So, what wld be the choice?


To go to GEP (if selected) but hv to fall back on tuition to remain in 85-90% std or remain in mainstream where there’s no need to hv tuition and still can achieve 85-90% in mainstream.

For me, I would decides based on my kids character.
If kids are strong willed, go for it. I'd heard many stories of kids not able to take the pressure...

I know of a case where the GEPper has tuitions/enrichments for all subjects with parental coaching (since young). Results above 80%.

Your question left out the most important part - the CHILD. What does the child want? What would the child prefer? Which would benefit the child most? ...


When DD was selected, I was the one who wasn't sure. She is a perfectionist and has high expectations of herself. I worried about how she would face to competition amongst the \"best of the best\". She is a sensitive child (some said antisocial) and I worried about how she would cope with project work. I worried about whether would she be able to make friends and develop social skills etc etc.

DH highlighted that DD was bored with school since P1 and she dislikes the drilling at P3 when she was placed in the High Ability class. He reckoned she would enjoy the challenges in GEP. The decision was made. She had a wonderful learning journey and now is in secondary school. There were ups, there were downs but at least, school experience is more pleasant for her.

Why the dilemma now? Results aren't out yet.
