Joining this thread, my DD PSLE year is 2014. Thought I gain some experience from this thread first.

You can even go thro 2012 PSLE discussion thread. You can find a lot of info.

      Thanks for the advice!

        hi will_lim,

        1) Using algebra to solve math problems is acceptable in PSLE.

        2) Little algebra is taught in primary school and even that covered in P6 is rather elementary. Many kids picked up on their own (eg. thru enrichment lessons or self study). As long as your child is not confused, it's something worth picking up!

        Cheers!
Will algebra get working marks? I understand that if a child is careless, he wrote the answer wrongly but the working is correct, he/she can still get working mark.

For algebra, as it is not a P6 topic, will they get working marks if they are careless and write the wrong answer? 🤷

I think you wont get step marks if the answer is wrong.

            Sorry to jump in.

Algebra taught in P6 is very basic…it’s insufficient to solve Math problem sums.

If I remember correctly, can use algebra but no working marks.

Yes, you can use, but no step marks. In other words, you should be very sure before u use it to secure the marks.

Hi, just to share, dd school taught them simultaneous equation which is algebra thus knowing how to use algebra to solve ps will come in handy especially for qns involving changes, double if n ps involving 2 or 3 variables. Though it is true that all ps can be solve by model but some of these ps can be solve more efficiently using algebra (unitary method) …

If your kids can understand n apply, I see no disadvantage to teach them n moreover they will have a good head start in secondary … Cheers n enjoy
