:yikes: Is it the common practice in all the school?
based on current 2012 P5, noticed that school use different Maths Textbook(s) / Workbook(s), after streaming:-KSP:
for P4 there are only 2 booklists, 1 for GEP and 1 for all mainstream (E/F and other classes all use same books) but come P5 there are 4 different booklists,
Primary 5
Primary 5 E/F
Primary 5 Foundation
Primary 5 GEP
looks like the REAL streaming is from P4 to P5
i)
P5 - use “ Shaping Maths”
ii)
P5 classes E / F - use “My Pals are Here”
iii)
P5 GEP (classes P, Q, R)
iv)
P5 Foundation - use “Maths Works !”

Yes, the last and final streaming....Dont see much difference which text book they use, E/F goes at a faster speed so sch prefers My Pals, the text bk is more like a guide line but the syllabus should be the same. Eventually they all sit for the same exam and those that are not frm E/F class does equally well or better. Not all frm E/F class are good in maths tho, some still need alot of drilling.
Talking about E/F classes, yes, expectations are higher and so is the stress level. I hv yet to understand how the selection process works to qualify into E/F. Is it solely based on the score n how the student hv been performing for the past 1 to 2 yrs? I read in earlier posts that if one pass the Ist round GEP test they will qualify for E/F class. This is something new to me as Ive seen quite a few pass the ist round and was never considered for entry into EF class. -
My simple understanding is that entry to E/F class is strictly based on the aggregate score of English, Maths and Science, and the best 80 girls in the cohort will qualify?
Going by the strong academic standing of the girls, I would think that even difference of a few decimal points will decide whether one is in or out of these 2 classes… -

Yes, this is what i understand and is also what the sch communicated to all parents on streaming from P3->P4E/F and P4->P5E/F.
No more streaming for P5->P6 so all P5E/F will go direct to P6E/F. -
Two years back, I asked a teacher if clearing the gep first round would have any bearing on getting into 4e/f and the answer was no. It is supposed to be as mwchua posted above. However, rules do change so parents can ask again from time to time.
Also, those transferring in from other schools at the start of p4 are not in the running for 4e/f (top 80) but they will be for 5e/f. -
I’m quite curcious whether all classes got math enrichment work sheet practice; or it’s only the the practice for E/F class.

during the initial first 3 days, 2013 P1 parents are Not allowed to go near their kids inside the P1 classes. No, parents are Not allowed to hang around outside the classroom, or peep into the P1 class see what their child is doing. On these 3 busy days, there'll be many teachers and assistants around assigned to help out. They had all these well planned out, do not worry too much; your daughter will be well taken care of.
Parents can only stand outside the canteen to observe the girls during recess during 1st three days of school, cannot go to the class. Not to worry, each P1 girl will have a P2 girl as buddy during recess to help them along. In class, there are parents volunteer to help the teachers with the admin stuff.lilac_tulip:
Hi everyone here,
Just had my gal PDF done yesterday. She is assigned to class 1A nxt yr. Any gals gg to that same class? Btw ..don't mind to share..what happen in 1st wk when yr gals go to Sch? Can parents tag along to their DD during that wk, ie see what they do in class?
however if you're interested, you may sign up / volunteer to be a Teacher helper, for these few days. As a teacher helper, you can help out in areas like:-
i)
take turn with other teacher helpers to bring the P1 kids to toilet (if needed).
ii)
ensure and check that every exercise book for subjects (English, Maths, Chinese) has the P1 child's name written on it. Check for the whole class.
iii)
basically collect the books from the children, according to list given to the children on what to bring for the first day- activity books, exercise books, yellow file, report card, health booklet, photo...
Not all the children will bring all the books so we have to keep track of which child did not bring what and follow up over the next 2 days.
iv)
also helped the Chinese teachers to paste the 'tingxie' content page (for parents signature)' into the exercise book.
may sound simple -
but these are already enough to keep us occupied busily.
Go for it if you can afford the time.
You can get to take turn to visit your daughter during recess
but still outside the barricade.

for the first week Jan 2013 when school re-open, everybody is new to the school. There is a possiblity that the school bus might fetch yr child back late home, esp. if it rain. Thus pls pack some thing light inside yr child's school bag, for the first week journey back home. If child is hungry, she can munch inside the school bus on her way home.
Hi phttph
Million of thanks for sharing and the pointers. It is great to have you ard to share yr experiences. -
you're welcome, dear (bluemint) !

i)
on FIRST day this year -
some P1 kids staying in Yishun reached home almost ... 9 pm; due to traffic jam + raining + school bus operator not familiar with route, since it's 1st day. Kids inside school bus were famished & tired.
but after 3 days - situation settled down, kids reached home reasonable time.
ii)
hi bluemint,
P1 also have Tests for Chinese Show & Tell, besides the usual English Show & Tell.
do let your child get exposed to reading lots of simple Chinese storybooks.
Otherwise if her exposure to Mandarin is weak, border-line or insufficient esp. if she comes from a predominant English speaking family, during P1 PMT (Parents Meet Teachers session) - her Chinese lao shi will feedback advise you (as parent) that your daughter really need to improve widely in her Chinese vocab, etc., eg: need to read many more Chinese storybooks, to help her overcome.
if you've purchased your books last week based on P1 booklist, notice that we are using Higher Chinese textbook(s), workbook(s) ? hmm, the expectation is there ... -
RGPS mainstream exams over liao? :scratchhead:
Today's traffic around Watten surprisingly clear!! Many people pontang for extra long weekend?
-
Haha, yup exams over liao.
Whether that has anything to do with the traffic condition today, I dunno.
