For girls at 10 (from my experience), they are really pre-teens with child-like as well as teenager-like mentality (& bodies!). From my dd, I have been 'blessed' with wild mood swings, streaks of independence, hard work, responsible behaviour and peeks of innocence, maturity & downright weirdness. She is somewhat like a Dr-Jekyll-&-Mr-Hyde personality to me  😓

      Sounds familiar to me 😉

      :hi5:

Yes, that sound familiar to me too ...
Parents with 2006 kids, haveyou receivedreceived the book list? Seems like all my elder boy's books cannot reuse except music!

Hi, not yet leh... Thought only give during orientation?

Anyway, didn't expect #2 to use #1's books cos I heard that MOE likes to change syllabus and textbooks every 3-4 years and my kids are attending different schools. I had given my #1's used textbooks and unused assessment books to NTUC used textbook drive every year...

        :gloomy: thought can save money
i remember for our time, i still used my brother's books (he is 3yrs older than me) despite the edition revision. we simple photocopy the updated pages. lol.
ds1 said health education and CME book cannot reuse as it is both a text book and work book. for Social studies, the title i have is \"interacting with our world\", but the ds2 booklist print \"inquiring into our world\"! :stupid:

but my ds1's math, CL books also all kiam chai (salted veg) already, as ds2 has been browsing them during his spare time. 😓
yes, those were the days... I used to use my bro's textbooks too. and he's 4 years older than me. Didn't even know what was photocopying at that time :scratchhead: ... With the constant revisions and changing of books PLUS assessment books, no wonder the publishers are making big $$$ nowadays! Luckily for me, I have a neighbour whose daughter is 3 years older than dd (frm same school) and son 1 year older than ds, so I always receive her hand-me-downs 😂

Really kudos to you for preparing ur ds2 so well for primary school! :udawoman:

My little one... hmm... has never been inspired by jie jie's doing hw, doesn't like to hold any book in his hand and can only think about bashing through the bushes, scaling poles or kicking ball downstairs... :slapshead: :stupid:

I can see it's gonna be a long and winding journey with him next time... :spank: :lightrod: :faint:

Question on higher chinese. Understand that most non-SAP schools allow kids to take higher chinese in P5 and P6. What are the pros and cons on taking up an additional subject? Would appreciate your views as I have only one day to come to a decision.. 😓

Rather than weighing the pros and cons, I will first look at how DD fare in her MT, if she is breezing through it then by all means go for it, otherwise I might drop the option and focus on normal chinese.

I think a distinction in HCL would get the student additional marks for applying for SAP Secondary schools, something like an additional 3 - 5 points. (Pls correct me if I'm wrong). But if the Sec sch is not a SAP sch, then no additional points.

For dd's 10th party I did a \"treasur hunt\", describing the plants around the estate, and dd & her friend tried to put a name to the description. So we had about 12 kids running around trying to match the name of plants to the description I wrote out. To introduct botanical terms like \"bipennate\" to them. Next year, I though of doing a \"murder mystery\" ... Its a lot of work and preparation on my part, but I think the kids enjoyed running around looking for \"clues\". AFter that they were all hungry so they finished the food an cake.

Wow! That's such a fantastic idea! But my dd doesn't like big crowd leh... I always encourage her to ask her frens (maybe 3-5 girls) over for playdates but she's not interested. For her bd this year, I brought her to watch 'Wicked' and our family had a nice (read: expensive) dinner at her fav Japanese restaurant. Can see she really enjoyed herself though

Wrt hcl, it is good when apply to sap secondary school. Even with no hcl background in primary school, kid can still pick up hcl in secondary school which I read that if get a certain grade in olevel, can skip chinese in Alevel. Still true?

If yes, that is the bonus in taking hcl in secondary school, and taking hcl in primary school, even if didn’tmopted for sap school, is still part of building foundation if you intend to take hcl in secondary school. But if can’t cope,no point force it now as not too late to pick it up later in secondary school so long kid qualify and willing to work hard to bridge the gap.

That's true... DS hates HCL, but hv to convince him that it is a bonus cos can say bye bye in A level, if he can perform now .
Too bad he is struggling .... :imdrowning:

My dd is in an average standard school. Dd n I hv been discussing whether to take up HCL if she is offered.

She is coping fine with the current 4 subjects n has no tuition in CL. She is not interested in CL, but is hoping to get into a SAP school and the main reason is becos her good friend is aiming to go there. However, she is not looking forward to the emphasis of Chinese culture and stuff in a SAP environment.

To be honest, I would prefer that dd concentrate on the 4 core subjects. But who am I to judge if I hv not even seen the HCL syllabus. Dd is quite the happy-go-lucky sort who is not overly worried nor concerned when exams are round the corner. I seriously hv my doubts as to how she will cope with an additional subject that she has no or little interest in. :skeptical:

                      Here are my questions:
What would u do if u are in my shoes? I dun wan her to think that I hv no confidence in her.

Will a child look bad scoring a C grade for CL in a SAP environment, while doing ok in the other subjects?

Is normal CL offered in a SAP school or all students will do HCL?

Looking forward to your sharings/advices. TIA

How to judge if our dc can cope or not doing HCL? Grades wise, my dd is doing fine, but CL is one subject that she has almost no interest in  My worry is, without interest, will she be able to sustain her current CL grades in P5/6, let alone HCL 😓
                        Need advice.
