      Mr Kiasu:
School just informed that promotion criteria for Sec 2 is MSG<3.0 instead of MSG<4.0. Anyone who scores  MSG>3.0 will go to \"Structured\" IP. This is causing a lot of distress to Sec 2 students now. They should have been informed of the promotional criteria well below their EoY exams and not now when results for all subjects have been released.

Structured IP is essentially Hwa Chong's O-Level stream.

Don't be unduly worried in the mean time; DS said the dean said in assembly that about 40% of all S4 students cannot promote using Term 3 results. We can only wait and hope for the best for the young ones.

Thanks. So the system is different fr RI. RI uses GPA. Max GPA is 4.0, for mark above 80. So wat is yr view on HCI, the pupils as well as the trs? Is it stressful?

Most of the teachers are very good. My boys (Sec 2 and Sec 4 this year) do not find it stressful and they participate actively in their CCA and other school activities. Hence, they are busy throughout the year. Some of their friends stay up late at night but not all of them sleep late. My boys sleep at around 10:30pm to 11:00pm. I guess different people have different study pattern, some can focus better at night, but not my boys. Time management is very important.

Thanks for yr sharing.Your boy in Ispark? May I know the class size?

40 percent is very alarming :yikes:

Just heard from my boy that the promotion criteria to sec 3IP is not more than MSG 3. Thou my son is less than msg3 but really feel sorry for those who can’t make it. Just don’t understand why there is a sudden change in promotion criteria. I dun think it’s fair to announce after EOY exam. M really worried for my son next year if the promotion criteria to sec4 IP is <msg3 cos the sec 3 EOY Maths exam paper is very tough. Is it true that starting from next year they have to get at least A2 for LA in order to get promoted to sec4IP as well?Haizz…no sure if m putting my sons in the right school now, giving them so much stress…din know about all these criteria before putting them in HCI. I wonder going forward how many Q class will there be with all these new promotion criteria implemented.

Well, I heard they (used to) only take 39 because taking more will cause them to be ranked… Kekeke, mayhaps Hwa Chong wants to be reranked with the other non-IP schools?

May be strategy changed? They want to give more vacancies to top ‘O’ students ?

It will be risky for those sec3IP going into sec4 Q class if they dun meet the promotion criteria. They only have less than a year to prepare for O level exam n syllabus will be different as well. Starting to get worried for my 2 sons.

Heard structured IP is still IP class, but giving those boys who has neglected their study more attention and structure classroom program. But if they continue to do badly then they will be put in 'O'level class in sec 4 so that they will have more options after that.

IP students are required to be more independent in their study. If a child went thru a lot of drilling and need to be pushed, he may not be suitable for IP programme. But HCI has such arrangement to allow them to at least complete a 'O' level there rather than transfer to another school half way thru.

Actually it is quite the same and before 'O' level period the 'o' level students do a lot of papers drilling. The IP test and exam papers are usually more challenging than actual 'O' level papers.
