I would like to share my thoughts to this.

PSLE is based on the 4 core subjects. IMHO, HCL should only be considered if your child is currently breezing thru Chinese. I would not think is logical or good bet to "insist" on HCL if the child is already not too strong in Chinese now as time should be allocate to the 4 core which is making up the T-score. The next question is, how would you consider breezing thru ? Again, you need to ask yourself if your child needs preparation in order to do well in Chinese now ? If, without preparation, she is still scoring well, i would deem as she has a natural flair for language, and would encourage you to go ahead.

To my knowledge, P5 HCL has more compre open-ended than the normal. This is a section which most kids are struggling now. We would really have to think hard though…

Dd school only offers HCL to students whom they think can cope with the subject. If they offer HCL to her, I will let her make the decision herself. I thank the parents who have offered their opinions on the pros and cons of taking up HCL here in this forum, and will discuss them with her. Correct me if I’m wrong here, may students who decide to give up HCL do so? If the do take HCL but decide not to sit for the PSLE HCL exam, can they do so? And can they take HCL in Sec 1 if their PSLE results are over a certain t score?

[ those were the days... I used to use my bro's textbooks too. and he's 4 years older than me. ]

Actually, in my school days, I wld prefer the hand-down text books...
cos they hv answers mah !

Ha ha ha, quite true... then hor, it depends on who is the previous owner. My dd also has some hand-me-downs from a boy 1 year older. His books have scrawling scribblings in the first few pages and then totally blank except for occasional doodlings for the rest of the book, so still pretty 'new' πŸ˜„ . When I happen to glance through them in term 3, my dd had added her own doodlings. I see this cloud-like creature with circular hands and feet skipping rope, leaping gleefully across the pages or moping sadly at a corner... :gloomy: πŸ˜“

I wonder whether she was listening while the teachers were talking... :slapshead:

Hi, would like to add what I heard from frens about HMT cf CL too. As I have yet to come to that bridge, I am not sure whether they are accurate but I will know next year πŸ˜‰ :

              1) There is no orals in HMT while orals makes up of 30% (or 30 marks?) of the whole paper in CL.

              2) In HMT, you have to write a short letter/notice/email kinda compo (like our 应用文last time) on top of the normal compo.

              3) In HMT, there are 2 OE compres, instead of 1 MCQ and 1OE for CL. The HMT compres test heavily on analysing and thinking skills, so the questions can be quite 'cheem'.

Overall, HMT tests more on writing of Chinese, it seems. On top of it, I think the students have to stay back in school, 2 hrs per week, for extra HMT lessons (I know of a couple of SAP schools doing it, you have to check with your dc's school how it is done there).

Looking at P1-P4 textbooks, the chapters in both HMT & CL books are exactly the same, with the same main stories. What differs is that HMT will have ζ·±εΉΏand some extra stories/excercises in each chapter. They also emphasise on different sets of words. Some keywords in CL do not appear in HMT at all.

Anyway, I hear of many cases of students doing better in HMT than CL for their PSLE, so go figure.

This was what ds1's principal shared with us. My boy currently spends a lot of time on CL. If he manages to scrap through the selection criteria for HCL, and has no objection to take it up, I will let him try to allow him exposure to more CL learning (assuming teachers do teach in school πŸ˜“). and then monitor his other subjects. If he struggles to cope, then it makes logical sense to drop that extra subject as we are not aiming for SAP school.

but hor..don't think my boy will qualify la. πŸ˜“

ds1 school offers HCL based on end P4 subjects - all must be in band 1. then in P5 assessment (can't remember if SA1 or SA2), all subjects must be above 80%, else students will be advise to drop HCL. I find it pretty reasonable.

yes, i read that can drop HCL if u choose to do so. but as for not attending exam, i am not sure...have to check with those experienced ones.

yes, can take HCL in Sec 1 if PSLE results over a certain score. but personal opinion is, if one did not take HCL in primary school, best is not opt for SAP school. other schools also offering HCL with option to drop to CL is better, as kid not only have to cope with 9 subjects, now he has to cope with HCL which may be new (standard much higher) to him if he has not done HCL in primary school before.

yes. i read from last year right here too...students getting A only for CL but Distinction for HMT. maybe it is the ORal component?
