PSLE leave: For or Against?
-
Btw, I always thought banking sector 的 HR policies are not family friendly.
From the tele workers (shift work) to the bankers (chasing numbers)....
How many staffs are eligible for this PSLE leave?
Not to mention the high turnover rate... I doubt there's any PSLE parents left there.
:?
I would incline to say it's a PR stunt... Like the other $3K salary for dishwasher thingy.

Agree with this.
I believe JT is completely correct in her assessment and is completely within her right to comment, either as a private citizen, or as the case may be, a senior political figure. It is an FB post after all, not a ministerial communication.
I feel JT's comment on fuelling fear is quite valid.. OCBC is free to implement watever benefit they want.. but calling it \"PSLE leave\", is in poor taste.. IMO. -

Sorry! Just don't see how it create any fear. Then again, everyone is different, including the children.

Some families may be well off and have academically bright children. Some may not be so well off but have academically bright children. Some may be well off but not so academically bright children. Some may not be well off and do not have acdemically children...........the permutations can go on and on.
Just let everybody decides what is best for their given situation. -
Assume that 50% of parents feel this PSLE Leave will not feed fear as parents are supposed to have a blain of their own, wise, can make right decision, etc, etc, while another 50% of parents feel it may feed fear as not all parents have a blain of their own, are wise, etc etc.
Just base on the feel of the other 50% of parents, the Leave should not be coined as a PSLE Leave.
What’s the point of trying to push across something that is controversial when it is not necessary to do so in the beginning? -

As have been mentioned, OCBC may already been seeing such a trend and they just formalising it.Assume that 50% of parents feel this PSLE Leave will not feed fear as parents are supposed to have a blain of their own, wise, can make right decision, etc, etc, while another 50% of parents feel it may feed fear as not parents have a blain of their own, are wise, etc etc.

Whether it is controversial or not, it depends on individuals. For JT to have picked up the issue, perhaps she is fueling the controversy that she did not bargain for. -
Doesn’t matter If it is called "psle leave" or whatever leave, If there is fear in the parents (about exams/psle), there will be fear. If there is no fear, no amount of leave (can call it primary school exam leave, secondary school exam leave, ip exam school leave, dsa leave whatever) can instill the fear into the people.
if there is no seed of fear planted in one’s heart, no amount of hoo ha will change that. If the seed is already planted within, the hoo ha may catalyses the growth of fear but then again, it may not. It’s all within oneself. If the fear in me grow, do I blame the person who talk about it? Or do I try to contain my fear?
To take or not, is a personal descision. To take it for it’s intended purpose or not (like me, I may take psle leave for other purpose if my kid doesn’t need me), it is also a personal choice.
I will be very happy to have other employers jumping on the bandwagon and do it like ocbc. But it has no impact on me in terms of the fear for exam. If I am worried about my kid’s exam, I will be worried - psle leave ot otherwise. -

Being a big corporation carries itself a social responsibility.

We take a scenario whereby talented gays are discriminated in a big corporation by their peers and the management has to address the issue. The issue has to be addressed within close doors among its mgmt and staff and not to appear headline, big big, in newspaper \"We welcome Gays!\" or \"We do not discriminate against Gays!\". This kind of controversial issue whereby will please one group but upset another group if have to be addressed need to be done within itself and not announced to the public coz of social responsibility involved. -
If you talked about individual’s perspective, what you say is fine… i.e. no need to be fearful.
However, we’re discussing the possible impact on the community, not whether one should or should not be fearful. Hence, I feel OCBC’s naming is in bad taste. The implementation is good, but the naming is no good.
It actually singled out PSLE as a reason to take leave.
Allowing parents to take leave during PSLE and OPENLY endorsing PSLE as a valid reason to take leave can have different impact on the employees. To say OCBC is fuelling fear is not totally untrue. -
