Hi, my son is in L9. It seemed like he did badly in SA2 for science and Chinese comparing to his SA1 results. I can feel that my son lost motivation in the second half year. Now he told me the highest score in Chinese is 85 /90, but he only got 72 /90. I felt so difficult to drive him now as he told me most of his friends have such marks. Science paper 2, highest 30+/40, but he got just 23 / 40 and told me most of students are like that. I really felt worried now. How far he will slip in the list in P6 final? The attitude really counts. He is dumb to scolding now. How to motivate him? He stay alone at home every afternoon. No pressure at all now.
Hi, your son is right that the science paper is a killer this time. if many pupils get about the same marks, then it is not him who has declined, but that the paper difficulty has increased. I think his Chinese result is quite good, if my son gets that kind of mark, i will be very happy, but i guess u have higher expectation on him or perhaps he is in C1 class. Well, only you know whether your son has tried his best. For me, the mark is secondary as long as my son shows that he has tried his best and not careless. cheers. -
Hi abc123mama
I am having similar feeling as you. I realised that children nowadays like to comment that most of their classmates get around the same marks as them in order to "show" that they are not doing too badly. But many times, I am wondering if it is really true that getting results around 75 is a norm nowadays even for an above average student, and just to pass higher chinese is already good, according to what my child says.
I am concerned that if they face such "norm" at such young age, and truly, they are already quite immuned to low marks (from their comments), is it really doing them any good in boosting their morale to obtain higher grades?
Sigh! Is it necessary for the school exams to be set at such a high standard nowadays? -
My son did not like to do mock paper. At home, we did not try any Chinese mock paper as he refuse to practise. He was also not happy to attend any tuition class. He is always at home reading books as he tells me in the afternoon while I am at work. But I think he may play handphone at home as I find he always put his phone in his pocket. I will send him to some tuition course in P6. Feel so worried.

yes, this year's science paper seems a killer. My son feel very sad yesterday about his Science paper 2 and Chinese results. He told me that the highest is 30/40 for science paper 2 and no full mark for paper 1.
Wow, 85/90 for Chinese paper 2. :yikes: -
The school does provide a percentile to show roughly where your child result is in comparison to the class and the school cohort. That will give you a guide on whether it is an individual case or it is across the whole cohort. This info is usually given out together with the report book.

Welcome.
I think most of the P5 pupils on this thread are from Loy9. I hear the same set of information from my boy.
Frankly, I am into panic mode after hearing his results for MA and HCL papers.
The only consolation is this round he passed his EL OE compreh (after days of intensive coaching) and he did well in his NC MCQ (only 1 qn wrong, after consistent practices since start of semester 2).
Since start of semester 2, he has been practising HCL and NC assessment books. He managed to get all correct answers. So imagine my shock when he came back home and told me he did not know any of the 语文应用 in the HCL paper 2. True enough, he failed this section 0/10 and paper 2. I do not know how else to help him in HCL.
MA has always been his strongest subject but this round he mis-read some questions. A supposedly 90+ turns out to be 80+.
Sci - I expected him to fail section B. True enough, he failed. What frightens me is he told me many questions are unfamiliar. Whatever happened to understanding and applying the concepts? If he is unable to do this, then he is in deep trouble.
That same day I logged into KSP and checked out reviews of Science tuition centres. Found one at True Learning Centre @ Jurong area. The centre is starting its Headstart P6 class this Fri 7.30pm. I will be checking out this centre.
Hope you find a way to motivate your child. Scolding is unlikely to help. -

Don't scold...it will not work. What your son needs now is encouragement...lots of it. Sit down with him, find out what went wrong. If he is having problems with certain subject, get help.
My son didn't feel any pressure even when PSLE was staring straight in his face. I panicked...he woke up in Sep. -
Normally what is the expected drop in marks from P2 to P3 for languages? I heard it drops like lead, this from ds’s CL tutor.

Dear P5 parents, did your children bring back papers for parents signing? My boy did not bring papers back yet. He only told me his marks. Science, he told me section A results are not out yet. Anyone know the status.
