School Teachers Working as Tutors

It's not surprising that more ex-teachers are becoming full time tutors due to push and pull factors. However, a full time tutor must be passionate and love teaching to have a sustainable tutoring career. Good tutors will have positive word of mouth as long as they continue their dedicated teachings and always keep the well being of all their students in mind. The bad or unethical ones will not be able to sustain as their students are not motivated or interested in their lessons, and sooner or later they will realise that students and parents are smart enough to find better alternatives.


By the way, I'll always strive to be a patient and dedicated full time tutor. I'm not an ex-teacher but I believe I possess the right knowledge and passion to share my teachings around. I'm a low profile tutor who enjoys sharing my personal opinion and views in KSP forum. My students and their parents will know best

How do parents verify?
How do parents know if this teacher is good?
How do parents verify how many years of experience the ex-teacher has?
How do parents know if this ex-teacher is experienced in PSLE marking & has done it before?
How do parents know if the dx-teacher is up-to-date with syllabus & changes??

There is soooooo many 'how???' in my mind.

Through trial and error or word of mouth. Even if through word of mouth, parents still need to trial and error to see if the tutors are suitable for the child.

I had a school teacher teach my son English last year...she is un-pro. She doesn't even know what to teach my son :slapshead: Told my hubby she is worst than those in tuition centres :rant: Went through all the work after each lesson and that made my blood boil. Hubby advised me to give her a chance...I was like, 'What? $80 for nothing constructive and ask what to teach before each lesson?' NO way am I going to waste $80 like that !!!

Then what is she teaching in school?

I wonder how she teaches...as a school teacher, she must have lesson plans...don't know how she could possibly ask me what to teach each time she comes :stupid: I have been a damn idiot to hold on to her for 5 lessons.

She's a real school teacher or not? If she is, she just teaches according to what she is teaching in school can already what.

I am a full-time tutor. I have friends who are teachers. Most complained about the huge amount of admin work they have to do. I think if benefits for teachers are better, reduce the admin work, etc.. Not many teachers will quit to become ex-school teachers/tutors. Being school teachers is a more stable job than tutors. Being tutors, we also face some problems like students anyhow cancel lessons and/or owing tuition fees.

when we started, my current teacher-tutor also asked what we want to focus on.

i will highlight my area of concern weekly.
after a while, besides what i highlighted, she will add in her own stuff to try to build up ds1's vocab and 'language-sense'
but mainly geared by which areas of improvement i want to see.
not very experienced, but very committed and knows how to motivate the kid.
