P5 science section B: my boy did an average job. Previously, he always lost marks because of incomplete description. This time, he had abnormal and creative thinking to the questions. For example, cage for pet mouse. He thinks if he uses glass, the mouse will be overheated. When sperm and egg fuse, baby comes out. Before my hubby and I read the paper, we are angry about the marks. Now, we have a chuckle with the boy together. Kids are kids. As to Normal Chinese, my boy did badly. Actually, he can understand the passage well. However, he did not follow the game rule to play it. I asked him to underline all relevant sentence to a question to advoid missing points. He did not care and every question, he only get half. There is a wrong impression in kids that they think one point they wrote worth 1 mark and they were brave to miss other points as they think they are secure to get full already. Actually, one point may be only 0.5 mark. I stressed this problem to my son a few times. But he was rebellious and refused to accept my suggestion and wrote whatever he liked to open ended questions. I wish this is a lecture to him. He dropped in CL from 98% last year to 90% or maybe 80% + this year. Attitude problems.

There are a lot of application questions. Pupils have to relate them to real life. I suppose they want to expose the P5 kids early to prepare them for P6?Parents of P5 pupils, how do you feel about the Science section B paper?
This year is the first time I stuck so many pieces of notes on the exam paper.
I am unhappy about some of the qns (1. Bird R and Plant S, 2. sperm n egg diagram, 3. Glass vs Plastic to build a house for the hamster) and felt some qns (1. Explain the closed circuit for the door bell to work and 2. Conveyor belt use of strong magnet) should not be tagged at P5 level.
There is a booklet A question which asked what substances are released from the leaf stomata during transpiration in sunlight. Oxygen and water is marked wrong. Answer is Oxygen only. School said water refers to liquid only and should be water vapour. I don't like this. If they want to be so exact, then oxygen is also wrong because clearly that is not the only thing that is released. the Ultimate Science Guide also mentioned \"water loss from the leaves to the surrounding\" -- this shows that even text books may use the term water in general, not necessarily to refer to liquid only. -

I feel the same way. Kids need to summary the knowledge from different chapters and apply them to answer the section B Qs.

There is a question about the similarity of toy car and the panda. My son said both of them can move, but the answer is both of them have mass. If this been tested in lower Primary, my son’s answer should be correct?dyh:
My son also got it wrong and I guess quite some of them chose the Oxygen and water. There is a booklet A question which asked what substances are released from the leaf stomata during transpiration in sunlight. My child got the question on bird and plant wrong as he was thinking along the line of how dispersal and pollination help to continue the plant kind. I wonder if continuation of plant kind can be considered as one way of helping in the survival of plant S. I see that as a more general way of survival, just like survival of mankind.
My son also give the same answer and was marked wrong. The teacher said must write this word \"survival\" in the answer. :?
I look through my son's Science paper, he got minus one or half marks every where. Hardly got any question obtained full marks. -
S6169:
The so-called correct answer for the Bird R n Plant S my boy wrote down was \"Plant S produces oxygen for Bird R to survive\". To me, this is ridiculous. I can agree \"Plants produce oxygen for animals to survive\". But I cant accept \"Plant S produces oxygen for Bird R to survive\" = Bird R will die if it takes in oxygen not produced by Plant S or Bird R must carry Plant S on its back like a oxygen tank???freezeat2:

The qn setter wants to relate concepts to real life- I am fine with this. BUT set a better qn lah. -

The qn was \"similarity n difference in the characteristics ...\". The key word is \"CHARACTERISTICS\".
Hence both can move is wrong. Living things can move on their own, non-living things cannot move on their own. -

2. Conveyor belt use of strong magnet) should not be tagged at P5 level.
sorry to jump in...but this question appears often.
my son was tested on the advantages/disadvantages of using electromagnet in maglev train.
\"my son was tested on the advantages/disadvantages of using electromagnet in maglev train\"
was there a diagram provided? -

Explain the closed circuit for the door bell to work [quote]
I think 2nd part of this this Q is wrong. when the switch is off, the spring metal (the conductor of electricity) still in contact, so the circuit is still a close circuit and everything is functioning.(electric induced magnetic force is still there).
What is the Model answer for the 1st part of the Q? From my boy, I think the answer also inaccurate. -

I do not think your boy is wrong to think the hamster will die from heat.
The qn is too vague - a 1 dimensional diagram of a house with no windows or labels it is a open top whatsoever.
I wrote a note : neither material is suitable. The hamster will either die of lack of oxygen or heatstroke.
