      0221:
      Too expensive!

      $100/hr achieving 100% then worth.

I'm paying less than $30 (P5 boy) per lesson for 2 hours...after 10 lessons, seen immediate result...from never passed since his P2 / P3 to above 50 marks.

And less then $40 (Sec 1 girl) per lesson for 2 hours...after 10 lessons, seen immediate result...from 22+ & 33+ marks in her first half year papers to above 50 marks for the next half year papers.

Passed finally for both. Good start just after 10 lessons.
That is cheap. Is it one to one tuition and does the tutor go to your house? Oh, and is it a full-time tutor?

I came across cases… one-to-one, tutor to student’s house, O level, $35/hr only. Part time.

Student managed to go from failing to passing exams and also understand key concepts betters. So… IMO, $30~$40/hr is about right for secondary level…

Yup. I think $35-40 is reasonable.

I paid $35 for P1-3 EMSC, and $40 for P4-6 EMSC. And all of it under the same tutor.

I have paid quite a variety of fees from very low to very high and i have to say the teacher is the one who makes a difference, I ever hired a dip holder to teach, paid her only $30 per hour for my pr4 DS , within 3 months my son improved but she doesnt wan to teach anymore after a year as she is gg to work full time in her own accounting industry.

Another case is when i hired nie teachers, they are so busy and expensive and my DS did not improve but drop slightly after letting her teach for 6-8 months. She always changes time with me too.

I think its luck too that plays a part in getting a good teacher. Now going to send them to tuition centre instead. heard helps in interactions especially when it comes to languages.

I have to agree with whitecorp. I ever enquire on the entry level for NIE courses and it seems that they not concern with "me" as a whole; just my poly/A’levels results will do the trick.

Similarly, I have a friend who has a degree with NIE and what I heard from her is that "It give me more $$ for tutoring after I finish my bond with MOE". I will not disclose her name as she’s a mutual friend.

Most importantly, I feel that track records and the passion in teaching is far more important.

yup i do agree that being able to teach doesnt equate to whether they are dip or degree holders... i hope moe will relook into the fact that teachers are by profession, not by results...

having poor academic results doesnt mean one cannot be a good teacher... this is probably the reason why moe is not getting any better teachers yearly..

my ds1 is good in his sci, he tops his class once, after 2nd or 3rd, always within top 5s.. however, he doesnt make his explanation clear enough for my dd2 or ds3 to understand.. sometimes when i'm busy, i'll ask him to coach the younger ones.. but always come back with a lot of complaints.. at my ds1 rate, i would see him taking sciences in his upper levels and all the way to uni, but i doubt he can pass down this to his siblings...

this is unbecoming.. teachers are not interviewed for character check??
