Hey Mathsparks, read your comments about your nephews. Just want to say that it's never too late to encourage and help your nephews. Not too sure about their background, but for the older nephew which you mentioned that it \"may be a little too late\", perhaps he can take the \"longer route\". And that is to pursue his studies in a private institution like SIM or PSB Academy.

Alternatively, your nephew can work a few years first, and then apply to the poly or private schools. However, it also depends how motivated your nephew is and whether he wants to further his studies. There are a lot of sacrifices to make and whatever the decision, it will not be easy. But, if the individual is keen and determined, then half the battle is won. Good luck! :xedfingers:

Yes mathsparks !!

DH's cousins were also in the same boat few yrs back. One was a 'victim' of parents' divorce and went ended up in EM3, then ITE. But now in Australia doing well, studying Architecture. The other repeated 'N' level twice, did v well for 'Os', now in Poly and wking p/t to supplement for his studies

I'm teaching because I love the kids, not because I want an easy life teaching. If I wanted an easy life, I would have taken up RGS's offer and gone back there since it's really alot easier to teach (esp when I've taught there for a while and have all my resources ready and the girls are attentive and there's hardly any discipline cases in the school).

So far I've not had problems meeting targets (esp when my boss is the type who reads through every single file and not asks for random samples) in terms of having a certain number of assignments for them, etc. It's just a matter of ensuring your assignments are pegged to their capabilities with some questions to stretch them. It takes alot to motivate them to finish their work (yes, I ever used ICE CREAM as a 'bribe' for them to do well in their test) or do well, but at the end of the day, they appreciate your efforts & I feel good cos I know I've done my best for the kids.

I loved teaching the gals. They can be nice, bitchy , fun, compassionate etc...

It was a different thing altogether teaching them. With them, I have to always be a few notches higher in terms of lesson preparation, what with the kind of questions they ask nonetheless I enjoyed experiencing the thrill of teaching them.

BUT,

I didn't love the way that staff were considered as mere \"numbers\" and the school was run like a biz organization. More importantly, there was no clear sense of direction in the dept, esp when it came to Literature.

So I left and moved on to another school and its their loss

Just my personal opinion and experience.

Lesson prep is actually simple because I use materials from JC/Poly/Uni level on top of the secondary school syllabus.
