MOE to stop publishing names of top students?

The last part cracks me up :rotflmao:
When name announced p6 ppl already no stress as exam over. The other levels students they are not involve in the exam would they care much who is the top? Where does the stress come from? Unless some crazy fella wanna his kid to beat the previous years top scorer than maybe there is stress for this kid.Funz:
Talk about knee-jerk reactions. Just because the noise about PSLE being stressful is getting louder, they are now going into overdrive to avoid all possible contribution to that stress.
Whatever the press prints, people will read and thereafter, who can remember who was top scorer from which school in what year. Spend more time beefing up the syllabus and getting the teachers up to par. All these thing about reporting about top student and whatever are inconsequential. -
What is wrong with I want to climb that mountain because it is high, and the mountain I choose to climb is to be No. 1?
What does it matter if 10 years later nobody remembers who the top scorer was? It was a worthy goal at that time. What you are saying is that you should not be climbing that mountain because there is not necessarily any value add to being No. 1. How much more materialistic can one get?
Well… I don’t think our education system should satisfy itself with merely producing excellence. It should also produce champions. -

Precisely, whoever came up with this idea feels that all these reporting of top student from which school adds to the emphasis of academic achievements which in turn adds stress to the parents.

For me, no diff whether the information is available. Just feel that this move is unnecessary. -
As I stated in a post last year, Singapore is well on its way to becoming a mediocre country, thanks to all the clamouring to reduce ‘stress’ and ‘competition’, in all aspects of life, from schooling to employment.
If there is too much competition from top foreign students, we don’t want it. If there is too much competition from foreign workers, we don’t want it. Keep them both out. If there are high paying jobs that are too stressful, we don’t want them either. And by the way, we don’t want any other Singaporeans to have them too, in case they get paid too well and therefore raise the cost of living for the rest of us, so please send those jobs to China or Malaysia instead. GEP? Too stressful, but since I can’t get my children in there, I don’t want any other Singaporean child to attend either.
I hate to say this, but the politics of envy have taken over our decision making.
I have felt the malaise for a while already and this is yet another sign of how lily-livered a society we have become. -

[quote=\"SAHM_TAN\"]If MOE do dumb down the syllabus then I have made a wrong judgment abt them becos I dont think they would be so foolish.
I don't think MOE will consciously dumb down the syllabus. Dumbing down is seldom the intention. It is often the unintended consequence that sneaks in. -

No pity involved nor is it about unfairness to them. Was watching a jap cartoon. Suddenly I thought so strange of us adults to feel pity for the top scorers, their name not published this year. But what if the top scorers don't care :rotflmao: of course not knowing that they are the national top scorers, assuming no one investigate and then with absolute certainty told them that they are, they might not feel it's unfair to them that now MOE don't announce their name.
Heehee
Its not just about the topscorers. Just knowing the top scorers is a kind of boost to all Primary school kids. It tells the aspiring students - this is within you, strive for it , reach out for the stars , even if you dont quite reach them , you will definitely reach higher than where you are.
If we take the view that ultimately we do our best, what does it matter how good we are in comparison with others, then why olympics , why the nobel prize, why the oscars, why the grammys?
The best may not always be honoured, but these awards inspire millions and so even though only a handful receive them , the awards serve the purpose of pushing the the millions to go the extra mile.
So glorifying these few toppers is not about academics , its about (wo)man's quest for excellence, to rise above ourselves and shine. -
Brands chicken essence need to find new faces and angle to advertise and peddle their goods. I remember seeing top PSLE scorers used by some companies to advertise their goods and services.

... Academic prowess is nothing to be ashamed of but academic prowess is nothing to be proud of too. At the end of the chess game, be it the King, Queen, Knight or Pawn; it goes into the same box.
Why not? I would be lying if I say that I won't be proud of my son if he tops his class. I would be equally proud of my son if he tells me he shared his lunch with a less well-to-do classmate during recess time.
Academic excellence is definitely something to strive for. It is not 'the end all and be all', but it is of value.
Why do people give out Nobel prizes for scientific or literary achievement (amongst other things), if academic excellence is not meant to be celebrated?
The attitude that \"academic excellence is nothing to be proud of\", if it pervades our society, will be the end of our excellence and achievements as a country. -
If it is one’s own call to want to be the champion; why the need for external perks, recognition and honour to motivate?
Why expect to be recognized and honour when it is one’s call and desire to perfrom?
There is prize and recognition for top scorers. It comes in subsidized fees etc etc. It gives your choices to do 3rd language. Education gives you choices, is this not what education is all about? IT gives you access to better schools etc… are these reasons not good enough to encourage and motivate you to do well? ALso, there is leadership roles only available for those in top 10%. There is enough recognition and perks to motivate and individual to do well.
If one is rich is SOUL, he/she does not need honour and recognition from the public. -

When you watch a fabulous piano performance from a top concert pianist, please just leave the concert hall silently without applause, his soul is sufficiently enriched, his excellence needs no public recognition.
Accomplishment is enough, in and of itself......
