All About Preparing For Secondary One

For Primary school, Wed is usually the day when there is no activity after school... meant to be the day for teachers' meeting.


How about in secondary school, will Wed pm still be the free day?

Also, how about Sat? Will CCA be on Sat or weekday?

Does anyone know? TIA!

Wed PM is not free in my girl's school. There are some CCAs scheduled on saturday.

Honestly, tuition is not even needed for humanities subjects such as history, geog, lit and ss. Especially geog. Geog you memorise the whole textbook 100% A1. SS history and lit will requrire analytical thinking, but schools usually do enough without needing tuition. I'm speaking from the POV of a Sec 4 student who has never had humanities tuition from an independent school.

Its great to see that parents are concerned about their kids and preparing through letting them do some reading, studying etc.

Let's remember to give our kids lots of space to have fun. To go out and try new things, go on short trips (malaysia, the zoo, anywhere!), and most importantly, to socialise and hang out with their friends.

One of the biggest battles of a secondary1 student is in fact, not studies. It is a whole new school, and a growing teen would want to most importantly, fit in.
This will affect their self-esteem and confidence issues through secondary school as well.

If a girl/boy is unable to socialise well, no matter how well she/he does in her studies, they will dislike coming to school because their friends will outrightly bully them, tease them and octrasize them. This is a case of a drop in their results.

Of course, it will be good if we can go out and show them how to make the right friends. Good academic schools may not mean people with character and poor academic schools may not mean people with all bad character. The bottemline, they still need to learn to make right decisions. They are the ones going through school for the next 4/5 years.

I think it's the whole thing about being unfamiliar and feeling out of place. And also the new subjects and teaching styles...

For future IP students, I do hope parents let their children play during the holidays at least. There is no point preparing for secondary 1 now really, it is way way way too early parents. Just let them do what they want, go out with friends etc but do let them do some miscellaneous work like doing housework and maybe reading books(chinese and english), which is more meaningful. But do not force them to do assesment now, it is a really bad idea. The jump from p6 to s1 is really not that great and requires fewer preparation, just remind them to start studying once school term starts(after orientation etc.)
