 Yesterday I felt so insulted!

Was at an open house enquiring about possibilties of appeal and chances of success. The teacher was very polite but as she was answering me, the VP came along and overheard what we were saying and the score. She behaved like it was a joke. She gave out a laugh, shaking her head and said no, no, no! Not possible. What lousy EQ! As if we were more than 10 marks away or trying to appeal from Normal to Express!!!

I'm sure they have DSA cases who might have gotten the same score or worse!

      We left right away.

      Hey fifi,
It's indeed a blessing in disguise that person lacking in EQ showed true colours...if your son had entered, it would be another painful 4 years.
One spoilt apple don't make a school. The teachers, the culture, the motto, etc are more important than one individual (VP) who probably don't teach and may not be around that long.

When a person is feeling down, many things, words and actions that come your way can be deemed as negative and inappropriate. It is easy then to let your sensitivity marred your judgement. Do look beyond bad experiences and look at the bigger picture. If the school has an admirable track record and willing teachers who would go beyond teaching, you got a school.

True, but Thursday's setback is enough for now.

        Hi fifiyeo,

I go for that feel…if the school has a welcome feel, I will consider. That was how we decided on his first choice. Fortunately, my son and I share that similar feeling…like it and reasonable, we will go for it.

As a tutor who has been guiding a group of pupils taking the PSLE this year, I feel that we should focus on improvement, rather than focusing on why the child did not manage to achieve a high score ie T-Score of 250 or above.

For example, I had a pupil who had been getting Ds and Es in Mathematics since Primary 5. I took her since early this year and despite being weak in the subject, she has a wonderful attitude towards learning. She is not afraid of asking questions whenever she is doubtful about a concept. She persevered even when she continued to fail during her CA1 and SA1 this year. She finally reaped the fruits of her labour during Prelims when she managed to pass her Maths exam for the first time in two years.

And when she received her PSLE result slip, she cried when she saw that she got a B for Maths.

I am happy for her, happier in fact than for those who received As as her story is one of perseverance and determination. She knows what she wants and is not afraid to work hard for it.

So if your child has shown improvement in certain subjects, give him/her a pat on the back. Celebrate the little successes rather than just focussing on the three digits.

Hi, does anybody has any link on the number of intake for the top 10 or 20 schools? Since this year there are 3000 more ‘dragons’, just want to do some calculation on the risk.

My son has been offered following Thrid Language - 09-Malay (Special Proogramme), 10-Chinese (Special Proogramme), 56-Arabic, 58-Bahasa Indonesia, 06-French, 08-German. As we have only one kid and no previous experience with Secondary Schools. I need your advise - should we choose any third language for him, any benefits of third language. Your feedback/response is highly appreciated.

Is your DS in 'O' level or IP?

Thanks for the response he has got PSLE score of 257 and has got ACS(I) O level via DSA regards

Third language is like taking an additional subject. Your child must be able to cope & he must have interest in it.

Thanks & Best Regards for the advise

For third Lang, my understanding is that they will be useful only for 'O' level, for which a deduction of 2 pts from O level results upon achieving certain good result after the 3rd Lang study. If IB program does not consider this as criteria, my suggestion is not to take, cos it will take up additional loads.

                      parent111,

Your ds got ACS(I) O level via DSA. This means he will take O levels and based on his O-level results (L1B5), he will apply to a JC where he will do his A levels.

ACS(I) is affilated to ACJC. This means he can deduct 2 points from his L1B5 if he applies to ACJC.
He can also deduct 2 points if he scores A1 or A2 for his CCA.

HOWEVER, a maximum of 4 points deduction is allowed.
                      Please read this carefully :
                      http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/jae/faqs/#bonus-pt

Therefore, if your son applies to ACJC and he has A1 for CCA, he can't have a 2 bonus point deduction for his 3rd language.

                      Hope this helps.

Third lang allows 2-point deduction from 'O' level results (i.e. if our DC can persist till then and take 'O' level third lang exam). But not relevant for IP.

My DS also got into ASCI IP via DSA and also offered third lang option now. He's interested to study one, but we told him that he has to be sure he wants to do it. Students in ACSI are required to take up 2 CCAs, plus all the new subjects, so going for third lang lessons after school calls for some strong interest and commitment. I hear from DS's tutor that a number of students drop third lang before the first year is up.

My DS said,\"If I don't try, how do I know if I enjoy it or can do well in it?\" Oh well, we shall let him try..
