I don't think many of the \"choose\" to be a maid. It is the best way for them to support their families and I'm sure they would all prefer to be doing something different.

I take the point that transfer maids have the right to choose whether they accept your rules but my personal view is that we shouldn't impose these kinds of restrictions on them. You are, of course, entitled to disagree - that is what forums are for 😉

The moment maid (FDW) stepped into an agency to sign up with intention to work as maid in spore, she MADE her own choice to be a maid. Bio data were presented to prospective employers who are looking for FDWs.

Employers didn't know any of them until they have been selected.
So did employers force them to work as maids? Obviously NO.
FDWs can stay in their own country and work, who said they must work in overseas and be separated from their families? I hope those FDWs who are still sleeping, thot they have been forced to work as pitiful maids in Spore, should wake up, face reality, the choice is all the while, in your own hands.

If you don't like to be a maid, hate to be labelled as maid, u shouldn't step into your home country agency and register for overseas FDW employment. Claimed you don't want to be a maid, why employer see your bio-data presented as suitable FDW candidate? Employers didn't force you submit passport and pay your local agency fee.... did we? Did your local agency steal your passport and make you work in Spore as a lowly MAID?

Agreed to employer's terms but failed to carry out role as FDW is intentionally telling lies, dishonest. I'm very disappointed our MOM allow FDW with evil intention to work in Spore.

Spore is not a fair place for FDW's employers. It is a heaven for FDWs and agencies. You hired FDWs yet they turned the tables said they were forced to work, slogging too hard ...who created this.... all those people who fought for human rights as well as our MOM!

So, who are we, employers or just ATM machines? Our requirements should be lowered to please the FDWs? Why FDWs had to come to Spore to create miseries? Not keen to be maids, why fly to Spore?? Are employers obliged to give in? For my case, no, I paid so much (I'm not a rich employer like some other people), beared all the liabilities so I deserve to have a person who is honest enough to agree to my terms and perform her role as FDW for at least 2 years.

Is nms1 supportive of FDW who lied to have a FDW job in Spore?
You certainly can fight all the way for FDWs and be a perfect employer (if you really is an employer) but you shouldn't say maid didn't choose to work as FDW.

Spore employers deserved to be so badly treated? :slapshead:
Hired and paid high agency fee for a FDW who insisted she isn't here to perform the role of domestic maid? Fair? You thought most employers have too much money and want to hire FDWs to waste money, bring them stress and headaches? We hired a domestic helper not a person to bring us headaches.

I signed the employment letter and agreed to my company's terms as well as code of conduct. If terms are unfavourable, I don't accept. I won't pretend to work then tell my company my expectations and force them to tweak their existing policies in order to meet my demands. It is unethical and dishonest.

I am frankly appalled at your rant.

Yes, they are here on their own volition.

But they are also human beings with needs beyond just the basic food and shelter.

i.e. if the maid, or any other employee for that matter, agreed to terms and conditions before signing employment agreement, it is not right for her to later turn around and complain about those terms and conditions.

My original comment was in relation to this statement by an earlier poster:

The first question I'll ask a transfer maid is can you live without a mobile?
If she wants to work for me but refused to part with her mobile during working hours, she is a no-no. It is obvious FDW is here to make friends, not to focus on her role as domestic worker. Earning money is not her top priority!

I know she's lonely in Sg but my FDW can step out of my house to chit chat while taking my kid to playground or when she does her marketing (alone) almost everyday so I don't see the reason why mobile phone is a must.

I agree that if a maid has agreed to something she should stick to it. I won't talk about maids who may be pressured into agreeing to something by the agent, not told the conditions or unable to understand.

My point was simply that I don't agree with imposing those kind of conditions on a maid. I know that many will disagree but I find it hard enough to imagine what life is like for my maid without cutting her off from friends and family.

I think they are here \"by choice\" only to the extent that the \"aunty\" sitting on the pavement outside my office selling tissue paper chooses to be there or that the old man clearing tables in the hawker centre chooses to be there. The choice they have is the survival of their family.

                Completely agree.

If they are desperate enough they may agree in the heat of the moment, but is it even a fair condition to impose in the first place?

I’m sure we’ve all seen maids being treated harshly by their employers.

We’ve all read stories in the newspapers about (a few) maids who were abused by their employers.
We all know that some employers expect 14 hours of work a day with no chance to leave the apartment, no chance to make a phone call, and no chance for a friendly five minute chat with the maid next door.
I’m quite sure that is not the picture of a maid’s life in Singapore as painted by the employment agencies doing the recruiting in her home country.

I think a lot of us have forgotten our forefathers or even some of our parents used to be one of the migrant workers. While our forefathers hv slogged to provide us the life we live today, we should be grateful and showing the same empathy for these group of migrant workers are only human.

It may be true the maids have signed the contract to come and work here - but they do not have a choice when there are no jobs back home - and to feed one’s child and family sometimes made one go into desperate measures. We as the employers should empathize with them and should not be taking advantage.
I am one of the lucky few whom has been successful in life through the sacrifice my father has gone through - sleeping in the streets for 4 months when he first get to Singapore in the 1930s, choose to save 10 cents and walk 40 mins to work and working day and nite to raise his 8 children whom all turned out to be good individuals.
My dad did make a choice to face the harsh life by choosing to board the vessel which took him 20 days to arrive in Singapore. He did made a choice to sleep in the streets and probably received the same treatment as how most people treated the maids with arrogance, and he did made a choice to choose to sweat just to save 10 cents to send his kids to school. He was despised by many being an illiterate immigrant but live a fulfilling life - not only raising his 8 children to be successful but building a mansion back in his village and using the money we gave him to build a school in his village and renovating the village temple. And he passed on last year as a well respected person.
Let’s not forget where we come from, treat people with the same grace you could like to be treated and we can all stopped going to our churches or temples to ask for blessing

If one were to leave home, work under ‘harsh’ conditons, it has to count for something, right? Stay on track, focus on the objective to make a better life, help support family and make as much money as one can, would you agree?

Maid job or any job, if they can choose to follow instructions; they only need to do this one thing, they can get very far to win the employer’s trust and favour to keep their job and eventually many extras eg. gifts and money.

If they show that they cannot follow instructions, how do we trust our household to them? Will they clean thoroughly, will my child be drinking from a dirty cup, will she be fed at all? Will mum get the right medicene at the right time? Will she be bringing BF home.

How to trust her with important and big things when she cannot even follow simple instructions.

How to keep a receptionist if she does not want to answer phones or greet visitors that come to the office. Can she follow instructions to answer phones as instructed… or does she just answer any way she feels like it? or worse…yak on the phone all day and not answering calls…

A maid’s job is housekeeping, clean, wash, iron, cook, tidy everything to make the house look neat and BE clean, not just look clean. They don’t seem to understand the job. Some families need more help with kids and old folks etc, the maid makes choices who she wants to work for. Some like kids, so it’s less boring and they get to go out and fun with kids. Some prefer housework, cleaning.

If the chores are not done properly, does having a handphone help? Does having Every Sunday off help? Will giving her these things, make her work better. We all know that we are fooling ourselves if we say it will.

Very few people like to work, not many like to clean.
