This is why I am not in favor of DSA. Why make the academically poor students join the elite school and suffer like hell.

It's a CHOICE. Nobody's making them. Or maybe their parents are?

Like criteria equivalent to 2pts in the L1R5 to get into Hwa Chong? I have come across some foreign students there can't speak English well even in their JC level.

With these DSA sports students, it makes other non sports students difficult to join to learn new skills. For example, sports day, only those DSA track & field students are selected to run for their respective houses.


Even a newcomer who is willing to learn new skills, can’t even get the recognition. Because every competition is only meant for DSA sport students.

1. IP students. There is a positive correlation between good PSLE results and good A level results. Majority of them who scored at >260 will tend to score at least 5 As in the 'A' level. The IP program in general teaches them important skills (like critical thinking, hypothesis testing, and data analysis) that traditional schools do not (due to preparation for O level exams). These (higher order thinking) HOT skills enable them to handle the A level exams better and thus it is no surprise these students will tend to perform better. However it is NOT 100% that once these high PSLE scorers are in IP they will perform well. I've GEP students who failed JC1 promos twice and was forced to leave school. Numerous too are those who finished JC2 without getting an A level cert.


2. O level students. Those who took O level exam and managed to get into the school will tend to struggle in the first year. This is because they have not learnt the HOT skills and will find the questions challenging. I've students with 9A1s and school results were mediocre all the way till prelim. Only in 'A' level some managed to get their full As again.

Wait a minute. I have a problem with the parts highlighted in red. And this is fair, how?

Why is it that back in the old days before IP, students with 9A1s (or 8 or 7 for that matter) do not need two years before they get their full As again? And that's generally regardless of which JC they went to?

Since the O-level students seem as capable as the IP students of getting their full As, the irresistible conclusion is that either the IP JCs or the traditional schools are not doing their jobs properly in teaching the O-level students the necessary skills.

hmm so what should MOE do? take out a restraining order against the parents? :evil:

Not to make a joke of it, Schools should make clear to the sports DSA students and their parents what could happen when things go wrong. After all, till P6 , the child can quit his sports. But once DSAed thru sports, the child cannot leave the sport CCA and trainings even if he realises he needs more time with his academics or that he cannot manage the both. That kind of binds the child. And that detrimental to his development.

We can say that the school should allow students to withdraw from CCA if they cant cope. But then we would have parents exploit that by making the child first DSA with lots of coaching , and then put up a pretense of unable to cope to escape commitment. Sigh! Sometimes I think humans are too smart for their own good.
