Why not send your child for a violin trial class, since schoolwork not too heavy? Your child may decide to focus on violin instead of piano.

Yah, just send for a Trial and see what you think. And what your daughter thinks. For all the teachers, I always ask for a trial. If not satisfied, book more than one trial with different teachers.

Otherwise 1 hour or more of practice per day each for piano and violin... :faint:

There are a growing numbers of people who pick up piano much later in life because of various reasons. That includes me who started at 17 years old and still made it in the end to finish full time study in music and become a full time teacher, so it is never too late.

If you like other instruments, all of them are examinable by ABRSM from grade 1-8 (except for chinese instruments such as dizi which is administered by a Chinese board). The only issue here will be locating a decent teacher for those instruments and they are not likely to be cheap. ABRSM theory can be of course taken even if your instrument is not piano, but the higher grade theories require some working knowledge of piano.

I am going to repeat what other have posted here before. It is generally recommended to start with a good teacher and stick with him/her all the way to completion of your grade 8. So if you are going to a music school, it is generally advisable to study with the owner so you are assured of the quality you are getting; and you don't have to deal with changing teachers (teachers in music schools are generally on one or two years contract). If fund is not an issue you should start with a good private teacher right away.

Can anyone recommend a good piano teacher with proven track records, reasonable rates and is good with small kid says 5 yrs old (beginner level), preferably staying around east? Pls PM me the contact and details if you know of someone. Many thanks!

For Chinese Instruments, there are already 3 Examining Boards that administer exams in Singapore. All have Grades up to 9 and the Diploma. No need theory prerequisite.

Even Chinese instrumental exams' diploma requires Grade 9 as a prerequisite.

But I know of people who take grade 8 theory without any prior theory exam though. HAHA!
