But there is a 2-point deduction for active CCA participation and participation in the more sedate CCA will not earn sufficient points to get the 2-point deduction.
CCA in secondary sch is compulsory......
Yes, not active participation will not be able to earn enough pts for A1/2 for the 4 yrs...

The CCA points will be converted to a grade where it is used as bonus points for JCs/ poly admissions.
Even in my gal's IP sch where she doesnt need it for JC's admission,
the CCA pts will be used as bonus pts for their GPA computation....

Please read more abt the LEAPS grading system illustrated by one of the sch website or Moe website.....

      L - Leadership
      E - Enrichment
      A - Achievement
      P - Participation
S - Service ( for this, one will requires total of 100 CIP hrs in order to obtain a max pt of 5 pts)

        Hi hi,

Important to be involved actively in CCAB. Someone I know did not make it to NUS Medicine Fac though he got all As in his A level. Those who made it were very active in CCAs, and held leadership positions. To add on, CCAs will give you an added advantage if applying for scholarship. By getting As academically is not sufficient, you must excel in CCAs too.

I do not like the extent of time commitment required for active participation in CCA but I also recognise that CCA allows a child to develop interpersonal skills which cannot be taught through the classroom or textbooks. Such skills can only be developed through interaction with people.

I do not re-call any job interview where I had to submit my transcripts, Instead, I was asked questions where I am assessed on who I am, how I can fit into the company, scenerios of moral dilemma, etc. Even technical questions were minimal as there will be on-the-job training provided.
A hiring manager once interviewed candidates holding post tertiary qualifications who were unable to answer a simple question "Tell me a story about yourself." adequately.
Also, depending on the nature of the job, sometimes, a candidate with stronger academic ability may be bypassed for one with higher EQ.

Was told there is new syllabus for kids going to Sec 1…history, geography, math and science. The school which we put as first priority uses ‘Sing to the Dawn’ for literature.

Once posting is out and after buying his text, I am definitely going to check out history and geography at Popular. As of now, he started his first Chinese tuition lesson today. Cloze passage is harder and also there is 成语 to learn. I want him to glance through his history text for a feel.

The motivation has to come from him. I have seen parents helping extensively with secondary school projects and assignments. The kids won't learn anything and also won't learn project work dynamics - deadlines, skivers, free loaders, arguments, division of work, harnessing other's abilities etc. worse, they look towards the parents for subsequent projects.
Yes, kids have to learn how to manage projects and work with others. I don't know about sec school, but currently in the university, there are lots of projects and the marks that you get are heavily moderated by peer review from your project mates, who will not tolerate free-riders. Have seen students who are otherwise A achievers failing the project component because of negative peer reviews

When kids move up to secondary school, it's high time they learn to work on their own...at primary school, parents can help with those projects. We have to wean them off.

Most Sch provides Lockers. U can Keep some not everyday-used-books, etc there.
                    Do check with the sch.

My school every table underneath has a space to put stuff so everyone just leaves all their textbooks etc there. Though there are a few crazy people that lug everything from home to school and back again. :?
