Koh-i-Noor:
Higher Chinese (HCL) is Mandarin Chinese taken at first-language level. CL is a second-language subject and is easier. Passing HCL at Year 4 fulfills the local bilingual requirement, freeing up the alternative language slot in Year 5 for another language if desired (e.g. Spanish, German, French, Hindi). Otherwise, the student must continue to take Chinese in Year 5.Hi, autolycus.
My son is going to ACSI for IB next year thru DSA.
May I know what's the difference between taking CL and HCL? In all aspect.
What is the advantage of taking HCL?
I am advised against taking HCL, and was told that if taking HCL it means the pupil is no longer eligible to do CL. Is it true that it's either CL or HCL?
(Sorry, I am quite confused about this, cos in primary school, HCL is a separate subject, whereas CL is a compulsory MT subject. )
Thank you.
Yes, it's true that it's either HCL or CL. However, if your son is good at Chinese, I'd advise doing HCL. That gives him more options all round.
Cheers! -

Thanks for the explanation.
DS has accepted ACSI & it's reflected on the S1 form. Just a bit kancheong cos we would not be around during the sec registration period. Thanks. I'll inform the office.
One more query, do you happen to know if French/German is held in ACSI compound or elsewhere. Thanks.
French, German and Spanish are all held on the ACS(I) campus itself. I do recommend German as a technical language and Spanish as a useful global language in particular.
I just called up ACSI on some enquiries.
To my surprise, the lady whom I spoke to told me that all the languages French/German/Japanese are held offsite at the MOELC centre. However they may provide one way transport to the Lang centre for the majority eg. French/German
Do you know who can I actually ask in ACSI to confirm as it will impact the decision. We need to submit our decision by tomorrow.
As a start to introduce & get the child to be interested, I would hope to minimize the transportation hassle & possible disruption (eg clash with CCAs/too rush etc. )
Thanks. -

Thanks.[/quote]If I'm not wrong, all 3rd foreign languages are conducted at moe language centre which is situated in Bishan. If there are sufficient students, the school will arrange for transport to the language centre. -

Yes, I was told the same by the office. Only MSP is taught in ACSI. French and Japanese in MOELC in Newton and the rest like German, Bahasa Indonesian are all conducted in the two MOELC in Bishan.

Are these language lessons held once or twice per week? -
julialai:
My DS is taking Japanese as 3rd Lang. Japanese and French classes are held in Newton. Once a week, every Tue from 3.30 - 6.45pm. Transport was arranged by the school, cost $10 per month for one way trip. Any CCA falls on Tue, students will attend classes on Thu, but no transport provided. You have to arrange your own transport.

Understand from my son that 3rd Lang is not easy. Dropout rate is high. The textbooks are not cheap, cost about S$100++. Do consider carefully. -

Errrr.....we already submitted for Jap. Hopefully his CCAs will not clash with the Jap lessons.
Guess we will give it a go & will let DS decide if he wants to put in extra effort for his 3rd Lang as its gonna be his life, not ours. We provide the necessary support, the rest his 'job'. He loves gaming & often stuck due to the Jap Lang, shall see if it will get him motivated to take that first step. -

Hi Uncles & Aunties (hope you don't mind :nailbite: you see, my mum doesn't like to be called 'Aunty'),
I'm a P6 student going to study in ACSI next year. I've opted to study Malay as a third language. I heard about the Regional Studies Programme. I have also read about it on the website. Can you tell me how are students selected for this programme? Is it very competitive to get in? What qualities are they looking for in the student :?
:thankyou:
Oops, way past my bedtime! :siam: -
Would appreciate some about IP track & Higher Mother Tongue.
Yr 3&4, strand 2 : HMT is avaible as option
http://sites.acsindep.edu.sg/ib/ib2010/
If a student passed HMT in Yr 3&4 what happens in Yr 5&6 Group 2 (second language) requirement ? Is the student still required to take one subject from Group 2 ? -
