All About Market Rates of Private Tutors

From the postings, I gather that one could easily get a tutor with qualifications and/or experience for sec 3 maths for S$50/h or slightly more.

I have 4 years of teaching experience with proven result record but I only charge $30-35/h for upper secondary. I am currently an undergraduate but would convert to full time tutor upon graduation next year. So far, I have no intention of increasing my rate, even if I become full time tutor next year.

The cost of living is going up all the time and tutors are entitled to revise their rates but how frequently? Once in 6 months or annually? Are there any guidelines or suggestions?

I don’t think there’re any hard and fast rules. You can ask the tutor before you employ him if his rate is stable or if it will change anytime soon. Nobody wants a surprise fee increment every few months.


You can call a few agencies or search the internet to find out the market rate and use it as a yardstick. The rate should not increase every few months or every year, unless the tuition industry on the whole increase the fees which I think is not likely.

If the tutor is really good, you can always give the tutor a raise later if you want. If the tutor sucks, then it’s best to ask the tutor to beat it. No point even paying peanuts to an ineffective tutor.

I totally agree. My dd tutor teaches her both english and composition writing. for twice a week 1.5hr each i only pay her $240 per month and extra $20 for materials since i do not have to provide assessment books. however my dd attend lesson in her house.

From what I know, school teacher pay is around $45-60/hr. Ex school teacher is $35-50/hr and full time is from $25-$40 depending on experiences. There is really no gauge for the price. I think we determine of the price is reasonable base on the results.

Hi I’m an ex-teacher giving 1-to-1 coaching in English (including creative writing) and Math. My range is $40 for primary 1-2, $45 for primary 3-4 and $50 for primary 5-6, with a surcharge of $5-10 for locations outside of my estate in Sengkang. No surcharge for weekend slots which are more popular. Do you think these are reasonable market rates? Just yesterday, a parent living in a condo quoted me $20/hour after an extensive interview of my teaching style and pedagogy.
