RGS will have to be under RI(JC) & hence, looses it's identity.

Actually they don't have to merge but it would be good if they can move next to the RI(JC) and make that the Raffles hub. Then they can also have more economies of scales for events conducted.

BGR will flourish in the area... there is a bridge for crossing over. soon it will also be termed as 'Love' bridge

        Hi All,

I read in the RGS forum where there were queries about the leadership positions available in the sec 1 level. What about RI, anyone can share? Are they like RGS where teachers will nominate the prefects while students / classmates will volunteer, nominate and vote for the class chair and vice-chair.

In short how are the leaders in RI being selected - volunteer ? nominated ?

Thanking in advance to whoever that is kind enough to share. Cheers
There are many leadership opportunities in RI. Base on my son experience, he will try to share the process. First of all, the highest level will be the RIPB. The students have to be nominated by the students and teachers. Then, the teachers will select a few for the interviews. After the interview by the RIPB Exco and teachers, the nominated prefect will have to campaign to be elected by the students. Only about 30 to 40 make it to the elections. After 2 weeks of campaigning, the students and teacher will have to elect the prefects. The whole process is a good learning process and experience for the boy. They learn to get votes and make use of tools such as facebooks, blogs, etc to gather the attention of the students and teachers. It is quite close to our parliamentary election. The number of students elected will depends on the votes.

At the beginning of the year, the class will also select the Monitor, Asst. Monitor and Treasurer to form the class executive committee (CEC). This is also another layer of leadership. Teachers will also appoint different students to take care of each subjects. Some students will also given chances to co-ordinate/organise the House activities and internal competitions.

The other leadership opportunities are in the CCAs. In the 4th year, the students can also have opportunities to become the peer support leader to lead the Sec 1 students.

RI has put in place a RLP. You can get more information from http://www.ri.sch.edu.sg/rlp/

Is this exam requirement by sec2 & sec 3 for swimming specific to RI(JC) only?
It's RI I was refering to, not RI (JC). Anyway, I saw their PE (swimming) programme from the Raffles Programme handbook given out during last year's open house.

My son also confirmed about the swimmers getting to play water polo while the non-swimmers having to learn how to swim during the swimming part of their PE sessions. Not sure if they strictly enforce the bronze/silver thingy. Some of their swimming sessions were cancelled due to the H1N1 outbreak this year. Anyway, in the RP, fitness & sports play an important part. Not sure if it is the same at RGS though.

I think the campaigning for election as prefects follows the JC style of electing student councils. Campaigning also involves putting up a dance on stage to get attention, I understand. So, it pays to be 'thick skin'. 😄

As for the selection of class Monitor, Asst Monitor, etc., it may not be a case of those with the best leadership potential stand higher chances. I understand the boys may nominate someone (eg. blur sotong type) with the intention to sarbo for fun.

Anyway, boys will be boys. There may be some muggers & some who are very serious about excelling at school. Most of them are still very playful.

As for taupok( i've never heard of this b4 joining this forum), i remember asking my son about it. He said it's 'únavoidable' during rugby sessions, which is part of their PE programme.

You are right. Most of them are very playful. My boy shared some of the activities and notes his friend put out in facebooks and you will observe that they are after all normal boys and teenagers. They can be very childish sometimes.

I think the teacher will filter the nominations especially the Sec 1. It is not easy to get into the RIPB or CEC.

Getting physical punishment is unaviodable. It is quite common.

RI’s COP is 259 this year. Most likely a historical low for the school.

Are you sure or is this a guess?

You can confirm this when you report to RI tomorrow. The school will most likely reveal the COP. 😄
