All About Market Rates of Private Tutors
-
Hi, I am a Pri and Sec tutor in Jurong (93989072). Basically, my rate will vary according to levels and locations. So for my case, I hardly increase my rate unless the student promotes from, say pri 6 to sec1.

Similarly, fees are set according to level and location of the student. Parents are usually informed that the fees are structured according and are reminded at the end of each academic year (Early/Mid Nov) of the following year's fees.
Likewise, if I feel that it is really necessarily to increase my fees, I would do so during that period giving 3 months notice. -

Hi I'm an ex-teacher giving 1-to-1 coaching in English (including creative writing) and Math. My range is $40 for primary 1-2, $45 for primary 3-4 and $50 for primary 5-6, with a surcharge of $5-10 for locations outside of my estate in Sengkang. No surcharge for weekend slots which are more popular. Do you think these are reasonable market rates? Just yesterday, a parent living in a condo quoted me $20/hour after an extensive interview of my teaching style and pedagogy.
I agree with the other two. Be firm with your rates and wait. Must of my friends including myself are charging about $25-$35 for primary school students and we are merely undergraduates, irregardless of how many years of tutoring experience we have.
I, myself have encountered many parents trying to bargain. I just referred to online portals that offer tutors with that kind of rates. -

I totally agree. $20/hr is for students who are tutoring part-time while studying. An ex-teacher can definitely command more than that. If the parent has financial difficulties and hope for a lower rate, that is still ok. The tutor can decide if she wants to help by charging a lower fee.TeacherTutorEducator:

Hi,
Your charges are reasonable for an ex school teacher. Just ignore the parent. The rate which she quote is not sound. You will get better deals. Be patient.
But if she is well-off and doesn't want to pay the tutor a decent salary for her experience and qualifications, I say it is not worth it. Some parents can afford it but they are stingy. Why should a tutor settle for less if there is no good reason? The time spent teaching in school, the effort spent in studying in NIE and getting certified as a teacher all comes to naught. Basically, that parent is mean and is saying that you are not worth your qualification and experience. You are only comparable to a P/T student giving tuition. I would reject her immediately unless there's a compelling reason for me to do otherwise. -
Would any parent actually hire say a JC student/sec 4 o level student to tutor their child in primary/lower sec? Because I’m a sec 4 student this year awaiting O level results and I was thinking of giving tuition at super low rates but would any parent actually trust their child with such a young tutor?

My friend told tuition while he was in JC, he gets like $10 an hour though he is in university now. Nowadays there are more and more JC students tutoring. Some students from poly have also started tutoring.
I believe there are parents who are willing to try but it probably will take more time. Why are you offering to give \"super low\" rates anyway? Are you not confident of your capabilities to teach the child? If so, then why are you teaching in the first place? -

Super low rates would be to attract parents since most of the time they would be looking at tutors who have actual qualifications. I was thinking of $7-$10/hourSkyed:

Try $10 an hour, when things get better slowly move up your fees on a annual basis.

Haha thanks ok. I'll give it a shot in a couple of weeks or maybe start next year in j1.. -
My son had a tutor who specializes in Sec 3 and 4 Additional and E Maths. She is super good! My son had failed his Sec 3 A maths but after engaging her, he is able to score A2 for A maths and A1 for E Maths in his prelims! Now praying that he could score an A1 for both A and E maths for his O levels!!!
Her rates are reasonable too, only $35 per hour. If i am remember correctly, she has A1 in both A and E maths for her O level as well as an A in her A levels Maths!
