All About ADHD : Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

i also suspect my boy to have ADHD, still going through assement (1.5 years, seen the doctor twice so far) at KKH but whenever he goes to the clinic, he is very obedient to sit there and play the toys (new toys from new place) to entertain him while i am with the doctor.
Looking at that, the doctor will say how could he be ADHD when he could sit and play on his own.
As a mother if i am really having difficult, how will i want to suspect him as ADHD.
- He could not pay attention in class, attention spend is very short, making his result poor.
- He do not walk about in class but he could be figet and bitting nails or daydream
- Could not follow to instruction (asked him to stop running in a mall- could not).
- Awareness of enviroment is zero, just do thing without realise the
Consequence.
- Alot of teachers did mention, instruction given has to be repeatly many times.
- When seeing something require a little thinking, he will not want to do or anyhow do without thinking.
I am wondering if i should bring him to private and assesst him. Anyone can advise? -

He is 7, it's still unaware of environment, his energy never die, if I bring him out, he will run and jump all over the place (knock or bump into others). we always have a hard time when we go out.
Your son sounds perfectly normal for his age. I don't think any assessment at this age will be useful.MamaO:

He needs to have thing to do like games if we waiting if not he will ask then what he do, if not run or jump again.
He is full of energy.
Ask him to stop that but he could not, if we do not wants to follow his way, he get angry and scold and nagged.
He never think hes wrong, its always others fault. -

Your boy seem to be very active & can’t pay attention. If you suspect or worry that he is ADHD, then bring him to KK for assessment. I did the same time too when my girl was in K2 last year. The doctor let me filled up a questionnaire that will help to determine her risks. He told me that some kids are very active at this age but she has a high risk to be ADHD.
Maybe you could let him take up some sports that can let him used up his excess energy. At the same time, let me have activities that can train him to be more focus & help him to better concentrate. Do cut down on his sugar intake by avoiding sweets & chocolates. -

Even when he is sleepy, he will not want to sleep till you really force him.
We are still having assesstment with KKH but its like 1.5 yrs but we are still doing assesstment (maybe they also want to be sure, which is also good).
I send him for swimming lesson, but thing which require him to use brain to learn or think, he will not like. Nothing interest him except just play..
He has been like this since young before i introduce sweet to him, before sweet he is already sooooo active, i just feel even without sweet does not bring his active down but of course i try to minmize. -

U r right, may not be ADHD as there are a few like ADD, ADHD, Hyer active and some others.
Just that nothing interest him expect play, even when he play cannot be long for one toy, needs to change.
What is Educational Psychologist? what do they do and where to find?
I am worry as going to be P2, if he could not pay attention or focus on what teacher is teaching, he will not be able to catch up with P2 work. -

ADHD kids can sit still and play or even do work for a long time. This can go on for as long as whatever they are doing interests them. If the class is interesting and catches their attention, they can actually learn very well. Unfortunately, our school system with that many kids in each class and a tight schedule for the teachers, it is not possible to teach in an interesting way most of the time.
You can send your child for an assessment. From age 7 onwards, it’s a better time to get a more acurate assessment result. With private practise, you can get your assessments done much faster but it will be more expensive. Weigh out your options and see which suits you better. -

May I know usually how long does private take and also how much per session, anyone can share?
As his behaviour at time makes those impatient teacher angry thinking he do not want to listen, so I always have to inform teachers about he having assessment. -
Private practise is usually about $200 per session. But for assessments, there is usually a package price. It does not go by per sessions. My boy took many many sessions to complete his assessments a few years back.

Hi MamaO, Be prepared to pay around $1600 - $2000 for the assessment especially if you want a complete report that can be used for MOE exemption from Chinese and accomodations for exams eg extra time, quiet room, etc.
By the way if you are considering looking at for an Educational Psychologist, do check out their credentials properly and ask them if they have experience writing reports for the purpose of getting MOE exemptions.
I consulted my friends who had done this and it really helps to work with a Psychologist who understands how MOE works.
By the way, the report for exemption only lasts 3 years. My friend whose kid got his assessment done in P2 was told that his exemption is "expired" at P5 and if he wants to be exempted at PSLE, he needs to go for another round of assessment. My friend paid another $1800 to get it done!! -

I do not know exemption is only for '3 years'! Thought is forever as once you did not take up the subject how are u going for PSLE or further.
