Is surgery too young for a 5 month-old baby?

My son was diagnosed with a squint in one eye (eye ball not moving fully from side to side) and the cause may be due to some nerve or pressure on his brain.

However, my friend said that baby’s nerves will take about 2 years to fully develop. Is it true? Should I wait, or perhaps consult a TCM sinseh for alternative treatment?

My understanding is that you cant choose doctor at subsidized rate

Asp23: I was referred to SNEC via poly clinic and enjoyed subsidized rate. If I remember correctly, I paid close to one thousand (part of the amt paid thru cpf) for the day-surgery. Had the operation early in the morning, i went in with boy to the operating theater till he dozed off after anesthetic, then waited outside and after abt 2hrs, boy was wheeled to the day-surgery ward to recover. Rested for a few hrs and after the nurse helped washed his eyes and taught u how to take care, boy was discharged. The most difficult part was immediately after operation and for the first few days as the eyes are still sore. Some cryings were unavoidable and boy was unable to open his eyes for the first 2 days as he found it too painful to do so. Within 5days to a week, no longer painful. However the redness only subsides in about one month time and no swimming are allowed for one mth.
As boy was schooling, we chose to have the operation at the start of the school holiday and am glad that his eyes were fully healed by the time school reopened.

His squinting are on both eyes and not constant.

As mentioned in my earlier post, we only opted for surgery after eye patching for 1 and a half year as there was no improvement.
Maybe you can asked Dr Quah what is the success rate of eye patching for your boy before deciding if you would like to try eye patching.

We only realized that my boy had problem seeing 3D images after tested by optometrist at SNEC.

My boy was seen by Dr Quah in one of his visits, and upon knowing that he is the one specialist in children, when I book my next appt, I will ask the admin staff which day and timing Dr Quah is in and they always allow me to book appt with Dr Quah.

brought my 14 mth old ds to kkh eye centre as we suspect he has squint… the check up was a disaster as he was crying and screaming…super cranky and irritated… seriously i dont know how accurate are the reading…

Dr is not able to confirm his degree and request us to go back next wk after we use eye drop for 3 days prior to the visit…
Becoz i am a B2 patient… i am not able to choose dr… seriously i wonder will a more experience dr helps…

Thank you for sharing all your experiences. My DD now is 3.5 years old and we are seeing Dr. Wong at NUH and still seeing her. We have stopped patching my DD for almost 8 months already, partly from Doc advise and partly also because it is quite impossible to patch my DD. She will just take it off. We even tried to strap her arms (without abusing her) but it came to a point where my DW also found it too difficult. It seems patching did not help much. We are now told the 3D problem may have contributed to my DD motor skills. She still do not dare to climb up and down stairs without 1 arm holding us or some form of support like railing.

So even as much as I hate it, I think we have to put her through surgery. It really pains me even to think of any pain she have to go through. Furthermore my DD will definitely cry at such discomfort. She is too young to understand even if we try to explain. I really imagine hard times ahead for all involved.

bad news…after 4 mths in spec, my 20 mth’s squint issue still exist… Dr cheong in KKH suggest surgery asap…as based on research, he has a higher chance of full recovering if he does the surgery before 2 yrs old…


My question : My son is currently a B2 patient in KKH as we went through the polyclinic route…if i request for Dr Cheong to be the surgeon, he needs to be upgraded to A class right? I only met Dr Cheong a couples of time when she was doing her rounds… seriously i am not confident of my son being handle by MOs during his surgery…i prefer him to be handle by Dr cheong herself…

My name is Hang. My daughter is 2.5 years old. She is diagnosed with squint and lazy in her left eye. We have seen Dr.Quah at SNEC in January and recommended to patch her strong eye for 3 months and after that she needs to take surgery to correct the problem. As my kid is under 3 years old, she has to do surgery at KKH. She is going to do the admission in the beginning of April at KKH. Dr.Quah guaranteed to take responsibility for my kid at KKH. However, I am confusing as according to last appointment Dr.Quah told us that the estimated cost is about six to seven thounsand singapore dollar as we are foreigners. KKH otherwise told us the estimated cost is about fourteen thounsand singapore dollar. I was shocked. Is there anyone experience the same problem as mine.

Hi all, is there a support group in singapore for this topic? I would like to seek advice and help. It’s really a tough decision to decide on doing a eye surgery for strabismus.
