      mummy so kiasu:

My nephew is in the middle class of NYPS mainstream. My brother uses cash reward to motivate his son. The boy will get cash reward if he could get A for his test. My boy is an average kid & he gets 250 for his PSLE this year. But my brother told me that his boy from NYPS will do better than my boy. Since a neighbourhood school's kid could get 250 then 258 to get into HCI is easy.
If 250 is average, then does it imply 90% of students is below average? πŸ¦†

While ur bro is justified feeling proud abt his son's sch, he's not really a nice uncle is he, putting his nephew down liddat.

I think I answered that question earlier in the thread:

        234 students (47%) got 250 and above.
If we assume that all Geppers (100 students) got 250 and above, ny still has 134 students (34%) from the mainstream who got 250 and above.

You mean the cohort size of NY is almost 500? I know intake is one of the highest locally but didnt know it's that high.

If I remember correctly, it is 490 for this cohort.

Haha ... Indeed ... Like what I'd told a friend who asked me if ny is a neighbourhood school, I replied,\"Ya, it's in a neighbourhood.\" - not out of sarcasm, but I genuinely had doubts about whether it is as good as what my husband claimed.

A lot of people just failed to see that good schools go beyond just having good principal, teachers or even teaching material...n also the amt of $$$ the parents invested in their kids....there are more to it.
But, of course, if they are just, say, just 3% better in every dept, they just add up to make a significant difference. πŸ˜‰

Actually which school isn't in a neighbourhood? But NY is located in a neighbourhood which is not the usual one with aunty and uncle.
A good school is one which has a principal with EQ, compassionate heart for all staff and students, gets HODs to prepare materials to teach ALL the classes and not just the cream. He/she should make sure no kid is left behind.

But PH is a very good school to many, ESP those who wanted but couldn't get in! πŸ˜‰

Many moved house to get into PH.
Not many who are ALREADY in are in top classes. Even if they are in top classes, these kids have external help. It's not always the case that those are left behind are late bloomers.

Wow...34% is very high. No wonder so many parents want to send their kids to NYPS. Btw, the top scorer (276) in my boy school was not selected for GEP. There is another boy who chose not to go for GEP gets 274.

2012 PSLE is over as far as I am concerned. In order to prevent another heart attack like this year, I am reviewing mistakes made in order NOT to repeat again in 2016 :xedfingers:

BTW, I have a soft spot for MY alma mater.

I just want to say that the average PH T-score has been around 226-228 for the last few years, not fantastic like the MGSs & NYs but still well above the national average. So I don’t get the [implied] allegation that the sch only focuses on the top classes.
