COP 2012 - For Secondary Schools in 2013
-
koguma:
Nav14, as long as you and your child are alright with the travelling time, I dont think you should be concern abt other people opinions. Some parents are just concern abt how tiring your child will be after a long day in school plus long travelling time. ... Although Singapore is small, some people still think travelling on MRT from Pasir Ris to Joo Koon is FAR!!
Agree with koguma! Some parents feel the child can take a mental break while travelling and distance is not a big problem. On the other hand, I know of people who travel from Pasir Ris to Tuas every day for years because the company they work for offers good work environment. -
Hi everyone! I had my PSLE 2 years ago and just thought I'd clarify some stuff
#1: 3rd lang resultsBigbubbles:
For 3rd lang, you will receive results when reporting to your posted sec school tomorrow. Upon registration you will receive a package with further steps to register for your assigned 3rd lang. In my year, we had to report to our posted 3rd lang center (Newton/Bishan) seperately.Hi, did anyone receive the result regarding 3rd language?
#2 How long will reporting take?
It depends. I can't remember how long it took at my school. Usually they will brief on admin stuff, when orientation will be, talk about the syllabus and have Qna. After that, I believe there will be sale of school uniforms and required texts, and be warned: there will be a long queue.
#3: Cut-off point and appealing
If you're wondering why you or your child's score meets a school's COP, it's dragon year, and there will be more students scoring each score. Furthermore, we don't know the decimal places for our T-scores so you might have juuuuust missed.
I should point out that appealing will be tough this year because of the highere number of students per rounded T-score. Good luck if you are appealing! :rahrah:
#4: Higher chinese
Only SAP schools take count Higher chinese marks. Examples of SAP schools are HCI, NYGH, RV. I noticed quite a lot of people are asking about NJC. I'm an NJCian and no, we aren't SAP school, so the cop is 259 without hcl. I have heard of people trying to appeal on the basis of meeting or surpassing the cop if hcl is added though. I think it's worth a try
Hope this helps!
:congrats: to those who got schools of their choices! -
FanFanX:
Despite their track record, I guess TJC may not be as popular as new IP schools such as SCGS, SNGS and CHS is b'cos TJC offers only IP and not mainstream. In the event that child cannot cope with the IP, he/she will have to find a secondary school to transfer to; unlike schools which offer both IP and mainstream, kids who did not perform well in IP can be transferred to the mainstream (O-level) in the same school.
location certainly play a part. at central location, u can go there from north, east and west besides central (south). if you are at east, u attract those from east basicallynav14:
TJC is more established espcially since already have an IP programme for Sec 3 students and have a proven track record for JC. Much better than unknowns like SCGS, SNGS and CHS where they have no IP experience at all and will go on to form a brand new JC which will have many teething problems. Ironically COP for these 3 schools is higher than TJC. I believe got to do more with location as TJC is not as centrally located as the other 3. -
nav14:
What if the choice is between a IP and non-IP school. That is you either get an IP school which is 1 hour away or a non-IP school which is say 30 mins away? Would you not be willing to make a sacrifice?. In our case, the choices based on the t-score were SCGS (IP) TJC and Cedar (IP) which would be borderline . SNGS would be much nearer but it does not offer any other 2nd lang other than Chinese. I am staying in Yishun. So what would be your choice? Opt for a non-IP school in Yishun , Ang Mo Kio or Woodlands just because of the proximity?
To me distance is a important factor when deciding school. Imagine school starts at 720am. If bus/train travelling takes about an hour, child will have to leave home by 615am. That mean child will have to wake up by 530-545am. this is the schedule of my kid and imagine he usually have to stand all the way (2 buses) till reach school. Rarely there will be seats for him.temptemp:

I am from far North and daughter got a place at TJC. I believe in a small country like Singapore , location should never be a factor especially from Secondary level onwards. Important to get the best school for the child regardless of location. Parents nowdays really pamper their kids with anything more than 20 minutes away being considered too far.
After a busy day in school, he will still have to travel another hour of journey home. But this usually will have seats, unless he come back during peak hours on CCA days.
Kids waking up at 5.45am is quite a norm nowadays.
During my days in school I travelled 60-75mins each way in old non-airconditioned rackety buses and still did well in school.
In my case I will be sending one way and should take no more than 25 mins early morning.[/quote]me only saying out my opinion lah, as quoted my own case. as parents of cause will feel heart pain to see own kids waking up so early daily + long travelling time, w/o seats etc.. & i don't owe a car so cant drive him to school. only remember calling for cab for him on few raining occasions.
moreover my child didn't do that well as to let me make a choice between a far away IP school vs nearer non-IP school  .. so i have no experience in making that decision. :siam: -
MMM:
not necessarily. there won't be as many snake and horse babies so i will expect the COPs for your kids to drop. COP is lowest score of all students who got admitted to the school through sec 1 posting, not minimum score needed to enter (although it is a good marker) and because of this year's high dragon population, naturally the competition and COP is higher. More top scorers. My advice is to average this and last year's COP for Miss Snake. If she can reach the 3pt-higher COP then great! But if she misses it by 1 or 2, should still be safe for her, though i wouldn't use that school as 1st choice.phtthp:
it's more competitive these days !
best born in snake or tiger year.
:xedfingers: I've a Miss Snake and a Mr Horse... that are due for PSLE in the next 2 consecutive years.....
Looking at this year COP makes me  so Miss Snake must try to target 3 COP higher now just in case ???? -

My dd 252+3 did not get into DHS
COP for DHS is 256 (inclusive of HCL).
Try to call the school and find out when the last day for appeal.
In the meantime, try to prepare a personal portfolio (academic + cca achievements, with certification photostated).
You might want to attend the talk in DHS (get the appeal form too!) and send your other half with your child to the posted school.
Quite a good chance. If you have any favourable CCA, you stand even a better chance! -
