concern2, I m reading dis forum fr back to front so will likely missed out on wat went on b4.

wat r d lessons fr 'Journey to the West'.
me also introduced my children to 'Three Kingdoms' besides 'Journey to the West'.
'Three Kingdoms' is wan of their fav.
There are many versions of this literature. Just videos alone, there are multiple versions. My personal favourite is the one below because the script is better and makes you think deep into philosophical issues - not just a show of kungfu and special effects.

There are many lessons to gain from Journey to the West. Briefly here and pertaining to points I have mentioned:

The ShiFu is a man of perfect virtue and purity, with many evil spirits vying to eat him up so they could have longevity. He is of highest morals, a symbol of an ideal value system that needs to be protected and upheld. His vulnerability is in his inability to see evil, always believing in the good of people to the point of being delusional and naive, thus many a times endangering the lives of those around him. The Monkey King who has the ability to see through evil is often accused and punished for being rash and trying to 'make up stories'.

The Pigsy is a character with all sorts of flaws. His name in chinese is called 八戒 - the 8 precepts. They include no to - killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lies/nonsense, alcoholism/drugs, gluttony, luxury, entertainment/cosmetics. I use my own words in naming these very generally. They are not the exact terms used. Pigsy is often not hesitant in indulging himself with all the above, and is the least able to withstand temptations. There is a Pigsy in everyone of us.

Sa Sng, the other 'most uncharacteristic' character, quiet, sometimes too quiet that he doesn't take any stand. His dharma name is 吾静(wujing) - \"Wu\" = understand, accept, enlightened, \"Jing\" = quiet, peace, passiveness. (Many 'lurkers' in KSP are like him 😆 )

In one of the episode, there is a also the real and false Monkey King. The false Monkey King is actually the evil side of ourselves. The seed that we sow today (e.g. hatred, anger, desire, admiration etc) results in our action in the future.

It is a long story, and everyone can have different interpretations of it. I watched Journey to the West at various stages of my life and every time I watch, including different versions, I learn something new, because our understanding of life and ourselves change as we grow.

You are talking about the books, the drama series or the cartoon version that they show on Sunday mornings? I like the Three Kingdoms too 🙂

Which version of Three Kingdoms? Can provide more details?

Thank you, that was a nice encapsulation of the story. I must admit having watched it so many times, this is the first time I've gotten an insight to the underlying morality.

Danke for fleshing out wat d various characters represent.
JTTW doesn't hold my attention like ROT3K does.
Interestingly, JTTW is required reading material in wan of d IP schools.
