I agree with kiasimom abt telling maid directly. However when I tell my maid certain things, she didnt look at me, as in no eye contact, no ‘yes mom’ and the face no smile. Wabiang!

        kiasimom:
I won't want a maid who has relatives and friends here.

The networking can be really scary :!:

Yes, it is really not cheap to have a maid here in SG.
Actually I agree with you kiasimom, given the choice.

My helper doesn't not have any relatives here. But recently, she got a call from a relative who has arrived here to work. On that day, she spoke for a v v long time. Then she informed me that she told her relative to call her aft 10pm on fridays if she needs to talk :!: , is that ok -she asked me. I said well, I have to speak to Sir abt it, but I suppose if its urgent, it shd be ok. She didn't look too happy but since then, she's had no calls. I suspect the calls will come in aft the relative finishes paying off her loan. We'll deal with it when we cross the bridge. Also, her contract is ending in Mar nxt yr, so if she wishes to renew, we will have to start on a new footing.

Sometimes, its hard to expect/anticipate evrything. I suppose as for evrything, moderation is the key and as mummy of 2 said - communication too.... of our expectations.

If it were me, I would tell her pls look at me when I'm talking to you, otherwise I won't know if you heard me. And I do not like to repeat.

Sometimes we have to be firm, and let the maid know we do not have to suffer their attitude. If you are nice, i can be nice to you too. If you are not, I will just treat you the same. Of cos, not to say ill-treat them lar, but can take away some \"perks\".

            hi autumnbronze

This sounds a bit like what I experienced with my first maid. Except she did not ask for permission to take calls from her friend. Also no fixed timing. i think her friend called as and when it was convenient for her, which is probably when her employer is out.

I hope you will not end up with a tricky situation. :xedfingers:

I used to have maid when I talked to her, she is not responding.
I just told her it is basic courtesy to look at people when they are talking to you.
From then on, she will look at me in the eyes.

When I tell the maid directly my expectations, she turned around and say \"If you are not happy with me, send me back\". :stupid:

And for most of us FTWMs, a maid is a necessity if we are to be in the workforce and not the luxury that most people (incl the gahmen) seem to think. Without the maid, we can't work and then what happens to all those ppl talking about bringing back educated and capable women back in the workforce? :?

                    mummy of 2:
Yes, and there can be unexpected expenses, like medical. Why is it that people only sympathise with maids, and make it sound as though all employers are out to abuse/exploit their helpers? 😛

I totally agree with this.. the networking is very scary. My previous maid came with quite a no of so-called relatives... Initially, was ok but after she had a HP, it became terrible... Even when I have told her phone calls are to be after 10pm everyday. The calls still come during day.. very irrirated.

Worse of all, her so-called relatives are giving her all sorts of information.

But to be fair, some of my friends' maids are very auto, although they have phones, they are very discipline. At nite, then they start to use the phones. Well, it really depends on the maid and of course our own luck in getting a GOOD maid.

                        Hi NicHei,

V impt for us that the helper not have a h/p and also no off days.

That is why we have not had any problems with ours for the past almost 2 yrs. Plus points are that she is teachable and good-natured 😄

                        But,

She does not come w/o flaws ... but then again which human doesn't 😉 😄

I have to admit, I have been lucky so far. Lets see what happens when her contract ends in Mar next yr ....
