Actually I’m quite curious. I believe majority of those who got into GEP would have received edusave award at some point (or maybe every year) from P1 to P3. I’ve read that it seems to be a struggle to even get 70%, let alone 80% or even 90% in their GEP results. Since the edusave award is for the top 25%, are GEP students considered for the edusave award, since they are doing different papers from mainstreamers in the school exams?


As getting above 90% in top mainstream classes, esp in P4 is not as difficult as compared to students in GEP who I understand need to struggle to even get 80%, are GEP students short-changed in this area then? i.e. from P4 onwards, less chance to receive edusave award as when they were in P1 – P3? …or do they separate GEP from mainstream in the school for the award? Can someone please enlighten me. Thanks.

I genuinely would also like to find out regarding the above. Anyone? :please:

Yes, that is my EXACT sentiments too! I did not know the rate is so high- 20%?!

My gal is from NYPS- so there is no change of school- just change of class....I cannot tell yet if she can cope with GEP without any enrichment- but I also do not believe in giving ++ enrichments just to \"cope in GEP\"- that is so pointless. I think NYPS prepares \"regular\" kids well for PSLE, so why the need to join GEP??? But my child is very interested in the GEP curriculum so she is in it...we shall see...

Any other views?[/quote]Maybe would be good to know in terms of absolute numbers as well? Some Schs have a much larger number who quality, some are rather small.
During DD year, 100% took up GEP but that's cos only 1 kid clear the selection

Since GEP has their own sets of curriculum and test papers, they should have their top 5 or 10 per cent among the gep classes to qualify for the educate award, the mainstream will have their own award lo. Separate.you can chech moe website. Shortchange or not I suggest dun dwell too much. As long as they enjoy their gep journey they won't trade for the few hundred bucks la.

Earlier, there was discussion in the KSP GEP forums about number of kids who qualified per school…I rem NYPS was 25 kids, while ACS was abot 35 etc…so 20% may mean 1 kid out of 4 who qualified…

In any case, its still some kids who opt out- I am trying to understand why they did so…

Can try for half a year . Not suitable or cannot cope can always transfer back to mainstream

Just for your info. Think there was a gal in my dd Sch. She turned down the GEP & stayed on. Apparently, was told the reason was they believe the sch was able to prepare them well for PSLE & din want the hassle of travelling to a much further Sch. She did well in PSLE 2012 - 28x. Almost joining the top score of 285. That's all I heard, FYI only

Think most of the GEP schools have full enrolment...some even exceeded...understand HPPS has shortfall but not sure about the rest. If parents chip in with the no. for, say, this year's cohort vs what was announced during the briefing, you can work out the no. who chose to drop.
But it's really a personal decision...I won't use the figure for any trend analysis.

What did the parents of the child(is it a girl) who opt out say? Is the child in the 2013 p4 cohort?
