Hi mummies, this thread has been quiet for a few days.

Just attended a class parents meeting in dd sch last Friday and the teacher has briefed us what to expect and prepare our kids for this year. At the end of the year, all children will have to sit for a formal SA2 exam. Average time for one paper is about 1hr 30min, so we are advised to train our kids to sit still and focus for 1 and half hr....stress....For maths paper, there will be 45 questions with 3 sections...MCQ, short answer and problem sums. There will also be paper 1 and paper 2 for English...Paper 1 is compo and given 4 pictures, the kids have to write a complete story....this SA2 stands 60% of the entire year... :nailbite: The sch will base on their total result to band them into different classes in P3. :shock:

Same with my DD1 school but SA2 stands at 40% only. The rest r the same. Stress :nailbite:

Yeah... full length papers can be taxing for little ones... Esp math papers; very easy to lose focus by the time the kids reach Section C... So I think it's also good to teach them time management skills, even at this level...

Hmmmmm, should the kid start from section C, while the mind is still fresh?

Yeah, guess you can do that, but need to check weighting first. Don't want to 因小失大 lah.
By P3 many schools will start using OAS, so one more thing to get familiar with! All those bubbles to shade... very easy to miss out a row wor.

I must be the odd one out. I don’t worry about exam techniques and am against teaching tailored for exams. At this age, I want a bigger approach and picture. I feel that they will eventually pick up the exam smarts later.

My p4 treats tests and exams like daily worksheets and has no concept of techniques lol. I feel that assessments are part of school life so they shouldn't become a big deal. We don't usually know exactly when exams are scheduled but nobody believes this. :rotflmao:
My blur-blur p2 is very different from ds though, and I doubt she'll figure out exam techniques like time management herself. Plus ds1 has experienced full length exams papers since p1; plenty of chances for him to 'practise'. I kinda wish my dd had exams in p1.
If we don't make exams out to be high-stakes and thus scary for little ones, they wouldn't be all stressed out about them mah. I can understand though that results, class ranking, streaming etc are important to many parents.

Mawar, I really like what you said about bigger picture.
