I also would like to know more abt shooting CCA, do they really practise 3 times a week?

Yes, they practise 3 times a week. If selected to be in the school team they would need to practice 4 times a week near/ during competition period. They practise in school but coming close to competition they would practise in safra yishun. They've a monthly external \"competition\", usually on weekend (can be sat or sun) at safra yishun.

Is it okay if you opt shooting as 2nd CCA. That means just go for 2 times a week. Will coach be unhappy and mark you. My dd is keen in more than 1 CCA. Will they instead give the place to someone in the Wait List instead of you if you are offered and choose it as 2nd CCA?

      Thanks!
I doubt shooting is a merit CCA.

The CCA head said that all CCAs are considered Main CCA except for 3 of them (I can't recall, library or something). I am quite surprised too that this is so. For say, a band, how is it possible to let one member come only 35% of the practice sessions especially if there is SYF?

He categorized CCAs as Main CCA and Second CCA. Unless under the Main CCA , they sub-cat to Core and Merit. I am so confused. dd knows of senior who do 2 CCAs, a 3-day a week and a 1-day a week with overlap. She must be skipping some sessions for the overlap :?

For sport/performing arts cca which involve comp, it will not be considered as a merit CCA. Cos such CCAs want pple who are really gd to prepare them for competition otherwise they can just do away with the audition.

Hence, such CCAs do not take in students who just want to learn to play a certain sport or instrument.

During the CCA orientation talk, it was mentioned that only 3 CCAs (library, Malay society, Indian cultural society) can be taken as 2nd CCA. So I thought that means the rest are main CCAs. Don't recall any mention of 'core' or 'merit' CCAs. Wondering if there is some change in CCA policy this year? :?

one teacher asked my dd whether she wants to take the soc as a core or merit cca. So there is core n merit aka 2nd cca.

So a 'Main' CCA could be classified as either core or merit cca? I misinterpreted & thought Main=Core.

Likely the main cca here refer to core cca. 2nd cca refers to merit cca.

Can someone find a source for this new policy? The 2013 student handbook doesn't seem to be on iNet yet, and the CCA policy on the school website is apparently out of date. We are not in Singapore so can't ask anyone in the school and don't have a hard copy of the student handbook. Does this apply only to Yr 1s or all students? Thanks!
                    hello simkhoo,

The 2013 student handbook is already there in the inet. Here's the link

                    https://inet.rgs.edu.sg/students/Admin_Info/Student%20Handbook/Student%20Handbook%202013.pdf

If you cannot access, go to student portal-admin-student handbook-student handbook 2013

From the CCA info from the link given by Dodo,

\"All Merit CCAs have no quota; they can take in as many students as they can.\"

\"Every Core CCA in RGS has a quota (maximum number) with regard to the number of students it can accept per cohort. All students have to undergo selection trials to qualify and be accepted into a Core CCA.\"

If you notice from this year CCA intake quota document, all the CCAs are in the list, everyone has quota, even Uniform group. All also need audition/trial of course with the exception of the special 3. So conclusion is all the of them are Core CCAs? :?

Alright so I'm not really sure on this so please correct me if I'm wrong. I believe AVPA isn't a Core CCA as well so yeah. There are certain CCAs that cannot be taken as a Core CCA in Year 1 such as debate, it is still a merit CCA, however in Year 2 you can opt to change it to your core CCA and drop your original core CCA. For debate you might have to go through selection tests to show that you're good enough to participate in competitions and stuff but I'm not sure about other CCAs.

There are also CCAs which you can take as both a core as a merit, let's say for example Robotics maybe. If you can selected through the trials then you can take it as a core CCA, but let's say you didn't, then you should be able to apply for it to be your merit CCA, and then change it to your core CCA in Year 2. However CCAs like library can never be changed to a core CCA from Year 2 onwards and it will remain a merit CCA throughout.

I'm not sure about every single individual CCA but if you guys have enquiries about a specific CCA I can try to ask my batchmates in that CCA so yeah šŸ˜„
