-
1152am: Four candidates have officially submitted their papers. Punggol East voters will have four parties to choose from come next Saturday -- PAP, WP, SDA and RP

if there are 4 parties go for the by election, at least 2 will not get their deposit back....

Not sure what your point is.....3Boys:
In a way it's sad that pragmatism has won out over ideas. I know some folk in the SDP, they are really smart people and thinkers. A caricature could be that they are the intellectual opponents of the PAP whereas the WP are the electoral opponents.
Oh... you mean like they also live in an ivory tower? Albeit not necessarily the same one as the ivory tower the PAP is accused of living in. -
AC_Power:
As in 'the ends justify the means?'All those analysis, thinking, research are pointless if you cannot get yourself into the parliament to make the difference.
In that aspect, I do believe that WP is taking the right path. They do not need thinkers at this point in time, they need workers who are willing to work the ground, gain support, win votes. When they get a stronger foothold in the parliament, the thinkers will come in.
What makes you think that once they've become used to winning seats the way they win seats, that they will change anything?
Not heard from CSM for quite a while. Has the intellectual been sidelined? -
(fr yahoo) 12.16pm: PAP and WP supporters engage in chanting match, WP supporters singing Hokkien song and chanting \"Huat ah!\" to support their candidate Lee Li Lian, PAP supporters chanting \"PAP\" in between horn blasts.
'Huat ah!\" chant a bit stale for PE isn't it?
How about \"Wa ai liu lian, mia mang koh\"
translation: we want durians, don't want mangoes! -
Way2GO:
I agree with 2WG. I have the same opinion that SDP has ONE very promising candidate who is better than whats remaining available at WP ( no offence to LLL - I luv ah lian :imanangel: ), so the concept was good, though the approach and method just does not click, due to different parties' visions.
Contrary to d opinion expressed by d writer in his piece, me suggest SDP has been consistent in its approach to dis BE, which was to put in d best candidate fr d oppo parties forward in a straight fight against d PAP to improve their chances of winning.MR06:
A price to pay for SDP's U-turn?

Just dat other parties don't see it d same way.
Pulling out leave them in a better light for future contests than if they hv joined in d fray to contest PE n be accused of splitting votes, like wat was said of TJS n TKL in d last PE.
By pulling out to avoid/reduce multi-party fight, they did the most logical step. They can seriously think of a remote victory ONLY if WP agrees and does not field a separate candidate.
Once WP insist on their own candidate, they had no chance and also does not want to be labelled another TJS.
The article , imho, is very much biased to lend discredit to the SDP.
as for the ikan bilis, hope that they come to their senses and do the honourable thing and NOT submit their planned nominations, though unlikely they will do so.
DL may feel he need to show he is always there and will always be there. As for KJ, I have no idea what the heck he think he is doing. The overly eagerness to get into Parliament is hazing the obvious and clouting his judgement. There is a 95% chance he will lose his deposit if he run in a multi-party BE, let alone any remote chance of actually winning :slapshead: :slapshead: -
wat is KJ thinking? - dat he has a good chance of winning dis contest?
he cld hv done his father proud by doing a Chiam, who was on d ascendant politically but chose to pull out at d 'last minute' in d 1981 Anson BE to enable JBJ to go one-on-one with NPT to win it. -
W2G :slapshead: ,
He is indeed blinded by his ambition to emulate his great father, but alas they are poles apart when it come to politics.
on a jk note, DD claimed he will make a good bedtime story teller - sure fall asleep de..... :siam:3Boys:
Yup, I tend to agree that on a policy level, SDP seem to be more analytical and creative.
u r prolly identifying CSJ as SDP.Way2GO:
[quote=\"sleepy\"]And even more suprisingly they managed to woo some new strong candidates to join the party. Seriously wondering why these candidates wanna associate. čÆē¦½ę©ęØčę yo
there r quite a few highly educated n qualified ppl in SDP, n they r likely more attracted to SDP's progressive n liberal ideologies n democratic ideals rather than CSJ's confrontational style of politics.
SDP, as a party, has been at d fore front of policy debates.
However, do tend to agree dat association with CSJ at d helm has make them rather unelectable at present.
WP on the other hand, is a disciplined electoral machine.

there are 2 sad facts -
most people relate SDP as CSJ...................
and most people relate CSJ as the previous CSJ ( the one that the media depicted him as )
There are quite a few good sincere people in SDP, and the list of who's who amongst the supporters tells of an intelligent creative party.
( rumours abound about these heavyweight smart SDP people convincing CSJ to drop out of this BE ) -
It's a four-cornered fight at Punggol East
PAP high chance will win liao....
2 parties high chance will not get back their deposit...... -
