In terms of intellect, I think that Kenneth Jeyaretnam is a better choice than LLL. He has a strong foundation in Economics, so I believe he should be able to provide a more in-depth critique of PAP's policies. This is the type of voice we need, because the PAP ministers are also very intellectually capable. Anyone without that academic background may not be able to ask the right questions. Making generic statements like, \"The government should do more to help the poor\" is too vague and not going to cut it in parliament. Also, the ministers can easily dismiss their theories since they are not qualified in that subject. We need someone like KJ who knows his stuff to be in parliament. Unfortunately, he is not exactly the candidate with the best EQ. :faint:

We think alike. I am thinking of voting KJ, but tough to win in a 4 corners fight.

What is the nearest MRT station nearby? Is it walking distance? Actually I am still quite lost which part exactly belongs to punggol east. Is it part of punggol in the first place ???? šŸ˜‰

No more entertainment from SDP but I am still hoping to catch WP. Wonder if RP is worth watching... Think I will not waste time on PAP and SDA. WP will be like a funfair and hopefully my favorite fishball uncle is there...

Exactly and then the votes dilution so we know who is at the winning end after all.

              3Boys:

To those who devalue the role of intellectuals in the fight for the rights of the common man, I refer you to Mr Paul Krugman.

              http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/

Intellectuals are important but as a fiscal conservative, it is my impression that folks like Krugman makes it almost impossible for America to recover unless the govt debt is inflated away. However, inflation is thievery, especially from the middle class (the lower class has nothing to lose and can subsist on more handouts :yikes: ). There is no way a country can remain strong with a weakened middle class.

Incidentally, I have no idea how he got his Nobel prize. 🤷 Perhaps I will read his thesis when I have the time...

I find Mr Krugman's positions extremely hard to swallow also. I guess as Singaporeans, we are by and large fiscal conservatives. It'd be interesting to see if his writings shift when the US finally gets out of it's slump.

I'm curious. Why do people have the impression that LLL is an Ah Lian with only O levels when she actually has a degree from Curtin? :scratchhead:

People from grassroots cannot be graduates meh?

The good doctor may know a lot about the colon, but I am not sure he necessarily understands the economy better than somebody with a Bachelor of Commerce. šŸ˜†

Desmond Lim: 'I received intimidating phone calls'

Contrary to d opinion expressed by d writer in his piece, me suggest SDP has been consistent in its approach to dis BE, which was to put in d best candidate fr d oppo parties forward in a straight fight against d PAP to improve their chances of winning.
Just dat other parties don't see it d same way.
Pulling out leave them in a better light for future contests than if they hv joined in d fray to contest PE n be accused of splitting votes, like wat was said of TJS n TKL in d last PE.

I agree with 2WG. I have the same opinion that SDP has ONE very promising candidate who is better than whats remaining available at WP ( no offence to LLL - I luv ah lian :imanangel: ), so the concept was good, though the approach and method just does not click, due to different parties' visions.

By pulling out to avoid/reduce multi-party fight, they did the most logical step. They can seriously think of a remote victory ONLY if WP agrees and does not field a separate candidate.

Once WP insist on their own candidate, they had no chance and also does not want to be labelled another TJS.

The article , imho, is very much biased to lend discredit to the SDP.

as for the ikan bilis, hope that they come to their senses and do the honourable thing and NOT submit their planned nominations, though unlikely they will do so.

DL may feel he need to show he is always there and will always be there. As for KJ, I have no idea what the heck he think he is doing. The overly eagerness to get into Parliament is hazing the obvious and clouting his judgement. There is a 95% chance he will lose his deposit if he run in a multi-party BE, let alone any remote chance of actually winning :slapshead: :slapshead:[/quote]Just saw this..... wonder if there is some truth in it.

Fyi, I'm no critic or supporter of SDP but definitely a by-stander and observer like most Singaporean in this BE.

KJ certainly has a brilliant mind. His son I heard is even more impressive. However, it is his commitment that I question. He is spending more time in the UK than in Singapore. How attached or detached he is with local issues, I really wonder. Further, who else in that party is capable of helping him in running the TC if he really wins the seat? Serving the residents needs via the TC is part of this job as the MP and probably the toughest one.

Even a strong party like WP is not having an easy time running their AHTC, I am afraid RP might even struggle more.

Also, being intellectual might not mean they are good politician. Just look at how SDP conducted themselves during the run up to the BE. Absolutely appalling.

The killer blow must be the 2 posters that the two Drs happily held up for phototaking. I wonder what message are they sending out? Wasting money and being indecisive, is nothing to be happy about or being proud of.

@Strparent, If you have a strong candidate which you think is the best, put him up. That's the one and only thing you should do. By fielding him, you are being fair to him, to the voters of Punggol East and to SDP.

In contrary, he created tension with WP by making public the email comms. He created controversy by offering that \"joint campaigning\" proposal to WP which he subsequently admitted that he knew WP would not accept. If he really has opposition unity in mind, he would have learnt from NSP, announced that they will not contest right from the start, not after all these PR disasters. If he really has opposition unity in mind, he would not publish those comms to put WP in a bad light. In gist, you don't create dis-unity among the opposition in trying to achieve unity. It just doesn't make sense.

@MR06, not sure if that is true and I won't be surprise if it is. CSJ does not seem to be in sync with the rest of the SDP as far as this BE prep is concern. Remember when he told the whole world about his \"SDP MP but WP TC\" idea, who else is with him? His lone figure suggested that he is either making that call on his own without notifying his CEC, or he is receiving no support. Subsequently, when WP announced their candidate, Dr Ang, who distant himself from being considered as a candidate, commented that it is a \"brilliant\" move by WP for naming LLL.
