When will this marathon end? I thought after Primary level, kids will be more relaxed. Looks like may not be true.

This is only Sec 1! Unless he wants to drop out of school soon, the 'marathon' will last at least another 6-10 yrs. Of course kids should not be more relaxed as they go up in education, in fact, if they are, I can see 2 possible reasons - either they are giving up too soon, or they were too stressed in the early years. I believe parents should be more relaxed as kids get older, because the kids should be taking more responsibility for themselves and their schoolwork, but kids should be ramping up in terms of effort, responsibility, time spent etc.

I agree. In fact, getting past PSLE is just like just getting off the starting block in a race. There is still alot of distance to cover. So, still needs to be vigilant to ensure DC are moving in the right path. But totally agree with you that kids must learn to take more responsibilities on their own as they grow up.

Until now, I hv not bought my DS a handphone but I know he longs for one.


His sch allow students to bring hp but not use them during lessons. He says tilll today, he still haven't seen a public phone in sch so one time he used his friend's hp to call me during recess.

Should I get him one? A prepaid card or plan?

Do your children bring hp to school?

I gave an old used HP to my DS starting this year so that he can call me after school to check if we are picking him up. Once in awhile we can't make it then he'll have to take the bus home.

Definitely prepaid so you can monitor the HP usage rather than to wait for month end to get the shock.

Anyone ever heard or encounter bully situation in sec school?

After my DS finished his game session in school on Tuesday, and when his group make their way home, they saw a couple in the same school uniforms smoking near their school.


One of them told the rest sensibly - "don’t look at them!" - and walked past them quickly.

Woah…so daring to smoke so close to the school!

Yes, I’ve seen that happening outside some sec schools when I was shopping for DS’s future school last year.


Heard from my boy his classmate kena bullied by some bigger boys in school yesterday. Wonder how can schools control the situation once the pupil leaves the school grounds.

Best is to report to the school and hope this will stop the bullying.

My son was upset as there were some Malay boys who called him names...they asked him to say vulgar words. I taught him not to make enemies...if they speak vulgar words, don't join in but be gracious.
Whichever school it is, there are going to be some form of bullying...he has to learn to handle the situation.

Regarding academic work, his school teachers seem to be teaching well... hope this continues into rest of his secondary school life. Getting homework done alone is insufficient...he has to revise. So, he will get written work done first and then continue with revision after dinner and bath. It's a new ball game at secondary level...very very different. He has to learn to ask teachers if he doesn't understand.

Same in my case - much better teaching and learning... no tuition for now and my wallet feels happier!!

My DS stayed back in school yesterday to help with some project to do up their classroom with several of his classmates. He came back and told us that some of his female classmates used the F word when they had some disagreement. He said in secondary school, \"it is like this one, mah!\".

We told him it is not true and it doesn't mean that if someone uses the F word, he should follow.

What sort of bullying? If there is no physical harm and it's a one-off, I would not advise reporting immediately. Let the boys find ways to handle such situations themselves by either speaking firmly to the bullies, defending themselves, avoiding or whatever.[/quote]
Heard some bigger boys pushed the sec 1 boy. But another sec 1 boy (quite big size) came along and scolded them, and they left.
