It is good MOE's priority in the years ahead will be to teach students about values and character so as to better prepare them for the 21st century. Hopefully this would change some schools' culture. Although calling a school \"creating competitive atas girls lacking finesse in social grace\" is a sweeping statement, the gereralisation would not be born without an iota of truth.
Ideally yes. But there's only that much the MOE can do...whatever the schools teach will be destroyed overnight if the kids find out that their parents had been involved in premarital sex, visit to prostitutes/social escorts, EMA, etc....

In terms of values, whatever the family preaches is more important than what the schools tell you!

Yes, I tend to agree that home environment is the start. Schools act as the reinforcement of good values that are taught at home. I used to find myself nagging at them, and they start getting annoyed with me. But once the school start teaching moral education, and little reminders that I also do at home, they realize that \"mummy is right, teachers also says so...\". Well, at least, for the initial years before the rebellious age sets in... 🤷 Even then, it is a phase that they will go through for them to figure out for themselves before they turn around ...

For me, I am still conservative. I am already telling them it is against nature.

proverb has it that when a child is born, that ill-mannered child doesn't have a mother who teaches.

Should be the opposite right..? If kid is lead astray.. they are taught to be so..

              As the saying goes.. 人之初,性本善。

But it isn't fair to the parents...supposing the parents have taught well but the child is blinded by greed.

I would say for a lot of kids and esp. teenagers, the peer pressure plays a very big role affecting the way they think and behave. Where does the bulk of the peer pressure comes from? It is the school.

So school culture is very impt. To influence a change in sch culture, isn't MOE right in introducing moral education? It is also during the impressionable years (the phase in their life where they spend most time in school apart from home) that habits take root and character is build.

One is a law professor and former district judge…well versed in laws.

The other one is a young lawyer…both making use of each other. Ironically, in the school of law.

This case need not be made public…surely NUS is competent to handle it internally.

                    Values are taught at home.
We have seen kids being polite and not mouthing bad words amid an ah Beng school environment.
Vice versa -so called branded primary schools and secondary schools where most come from good families, there are some kids mouthing vulgarity etc.
Difference is what their families taught them from young...

When not every child has an intact family and good role models at home, the school may be the only saviour.....

                      You are absolutely right !!!
studying in AH BENG school doesn't mean kids will turn out to be ah beng or ah lian. :rotflmao:
Branded schools may churn out kids to be like their parents...cocky.
Our kids spend long hours in school...attend ethics lesson or CME (civics moral education)...hopefully they pick up a thing or 2 about human values.

                        I object to that. :stompfeet:

Who says parents who send their kids to branded schools are cocky?
