I would say it depends on the child and learning style and temperament.
I think they should be able to focus for at least 1.5 to 2 hours. 45 mins is too short.Just relax:
Every child will need their own way to chill out. The best option is to work out the revision and relaxation with your child as partners. He plans timetable and you change and approve.
Depending on child, if u start revision early then you can revise smaller portions at a time with frequent but short breaks. This helps to relieve the boredom of studying. I cannot imagine a P6 studying for 45 mins or longer at a time!!!
If u start revision now, then your child has more time so you should not need to push so hard to expect child to study for 1-2 hours at a time with short breaks. That is way too long for a P6 child.
For instance my DD for regular work ( ie. daily routine) , 30-60 mins depending on the type of work. Like memorising things, learning a new maths concepts , one needs time to let things sink in. Stuff like compo of course take a longer time.
If every day work is like a practise for exam , then it can be very draining. -

Yea. My niece writes really slow and my sister is so worried for her.The marathon towards psle is about 8 months...not long but not short bcos it's already mid Jan & Feb is a short month minus CNY holidays.
Build up momentum slowly...extend the quality concentration sitting at the table bit by bit.
Oh yes, train the child to write fast. -

Tutor made him re-do until handwriting became legible.
I make my younger one copy stories and time her. Or else how to finish compo if she writes so slowly. -
My niece told me some of her classmates wrote at least 6 pages in PSLE. They all happened to score A Stars in English. Even though the paper lines given in PSLE exam are wider than those in the school, Apparently it’s equivalent to abt 4 pages in normal foolsscape book, which is a lot to me. Even if assessment is on quality than quantity, I do acknowledge the fact that the marker will be able to assess the compo better if more info is given.

For compo and 作文, is it advisable to write on alternate lines? Coaching my niece, who says her EL teacher advised them to leave a line while CL teacher said no need. :?

For english you have to leave a line. As for Chinese its not necessary. -

Do you mind if you child does her work and have background music? Mine insists she must have background music whilst doing her homework at home. She says this will speed her up and help her concentrate. I am just worried that this will affect her concentration level when it comes to the real exam without a sound.

I disallow that when doing serious work. If reading a storybook ok.
My kids tried to use the excuse that their friends can do it, and they claim they study better too. But I reason that the moment they hear a song they like, they hum along....so would that be considered concentrating.

Precisely...the reason why I want kids to do 习字 for example, is to remember the strokes. If they are listening to music, definitely their concentration is diluted...especially for Math.Mama Mania:
