Punggol East By-Election coming ? MP steps down
-
To paraphrase Rational Parents' quoting WP's Chen Show Mao at the PE by-election rally:
\"It will take time for an Opposition party to grow into the role of being a credible alternative government. We must start now. Just because this task is challenging doesn't mean we won't do it. Because it takes time, we should start now\".
WP is just being honest n forthright about d current situation when they say their roles r to offer alternatives opinions, to watch, act as a check on 'ill-conceived' policies n counterbalance any excesses n not to promise wat they know they can't yet deliver without d strength in numbers.
The alternative parties do not yet hv d critical number of seats to decide on policies.
me believe d stance will begin to change when dat threshold number of parliamentary seats is breached.
It is not a level playing field for parliamentary debates nor formulation of policies when MPs on d opposition bench r not given equal access to national data.
Any credible political party's ambition must be eventually to become d government of d day.
Before dat happens, every extra man/woman in parliament affords d alternative party (parties) more airtime to voice alternative views. -
3Boys:
Opposition for opposition's sake.
Some people don't like the feeling of being lopsided mah... You can be assured there is at least 30% in Punggol-Pasir Ris

concern2:
Because many new citizens have fear amongst them for wanting to vote oppositions. There is a saying going around that they have NO CHOICE BUT TO vote the incumbent, and I don't know where they got it from. And then there is also this saying that if one never turn up on polling days, they will lose their citizenship, even for citizens who were born here.[/quote]Don't think so lah, or else how did WP won Aljunied?
What are you driving at?3Boys:

How about those that never turn up on polling day?
Your vote is secret, there is no tracking of who you vote for, so what's the issue?
The ballot boxes are sealed and locked up in the Parliament or High Court for 6 months and if no hiccups or objection, would then be declared by the court to be destroyed. -

Which is basically vicious nonsense circulated by anti-government/anti-foreigner voices. The information is easily available online if you choose to look for it.

Exactly the type of drivel that circulates during silly season (or the so-called bye-elections), I'd advise you to be discerning in what you hear or believe. -
Way2GO:
Ahhh..... Is everyone given their turn to raise issue by default? Like this time is your turn, next time is his turn, so essentially WP only has 7 out of 89 chances to bring forth issues? Or are there 'quotas' on the number of chance you are given as everyone needs to be given a chance to voice? Has anyone gotten by not to voicing anything in parliament and just \"kee-chiu\" when required?

My in laws always vote for opp, if there are any in the constituency, till now they are still Singaporean. Civil servant some more.
