Thanks to all who have replied to my above query.Until now, I hv not bought my DS a handphone but I know he longs for one.
His sch allow students to bring hp but not use them during lessons. He says tilll today, he still haven't seen a public phone in sch so one time he used his friend's hp to call me during recess.
Should I get him one? A prepaid card or plan?
Do your children bring hp to school?
Guess I will get him a pre-paid card without mobile data. Noticed his classmates are on whatapps even during lessons! How do I know? He uses my phone at home to group chat with classmates but sometimes while he's in sch, I have messages coming in! Like that how to focus? -

Even pre-paid card can surf internet, but the cost will be prohibitive if you accidentally log into it. Even some pre-paid card provides like 200MB of free internet.

As I have mentioned, to prevent accidental internet connection or stop your son from logging into the internet, call the service provider to disable your 3G function. -

Hmm...how on earth did they get to turn on their phones during lesson time? I agree, how to focus like that if they are busy doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Haha, I have one brand new but old model; not touch screen. My son said to me 'No way! I'll just do without one then.' Seems like many of his classmates have the latest phones, so I think he is kind of paiseh if seen holding a 'grandfather' phone  -

Indeed, this is what I fear. -

Yeah.....My DS told me last week when he and a group of classmates were outside school for a project, he exclaimed that almost ALL of them have either iPhones (although not everyone has the latest model) or Galaxy SIII phones.fifiyeo:

I told him don't need to envy as his current phone (Sony Xperia Neo L) is good enough for his needs. -

My DS school rules are very strict, especially with regards to phone usage. If anyone caught using it during school hours, the phones would be confiscated for 1 TERM! not 1 Week or 1 Month. So, my DS is very careful and he switches it off during lessons.fifiyeo:

That's my thought too. If you're afraid he can't control himself and may get distracted, decide what you really want him to be able to do, and get a basic phone and plan that allows only that. Also set out the rules you want him to observe and the penalties for infringement. My daughters will be in sec school in Singapore later this year, and we have already told them that they will be given a (basic) phone each, but there will be rules. We will probably only allow them to switch the phones on a certain periods of the day, and they must abide by school rules. If not, their phones will be confiscated or there will be other penalties. Their friends will have to get used to their unavailability at certain times of the day, and picking up a message a couple of hours late is really not life-or-death. I told them they can always give their friends my number for emergencies, and since their friends will be scared of me (my girls claim that I am scary), that should limit calls out of hours to true emergencies!
But, to him and my DD, I told them to switch on immediately after school when they have the chance, just in case we need to get some URGENT messages/instructions to them.
